Who's still thinking of buying a high rise condo after the earthquake?

Now that this earthquake has hit it appears that many of the Bangkok high rise buildings have been structurally compromised and no longer sound.

The superstructure of the buildings has been weakened as evidenced by the many videos showing foundation cracks and structure damage throughout the buildings. As per the usual Thai response to such things, it is more than likely the structures will not be reinforced to original tolerances but the cracks and damage simply smoothed over and hidden. In the event of another earthquake, high wind event or other phenomenon some buildings may not survive and suffer the fate of the Chatuchak Park construction site.

Are you still considering a condo purchase after the earthquake and why, now that the structures are compromised.

Me? No!!

My guess is that a lot of building throughout Thailand are structurally compromised now.  But TIT, it will be glossed over with brown envelops handed out to engineering inspectors.  However, when the next major quake hits, my guess is that quite a few high-rises will be collapsing in their own footprints.

 "Don't worry about that cracks in the high-rise condos - trust us, it's only cosmetic. Slap a little plaster and paint over it and good as new!"

On the earthquake thread I was very skeptical about condos being checked. I'd swore I'd never buy especially after quake. That's still true - but I read in the post that Thailand does apparently have thousands of engineers that could and have already inspected buildings. I look about a lot of the cheap structures in my BKK neighborhood and don't see damage. I think my comments were a bit negative, cynical assuming the story correct.

Very disappointed I couldn't make simple calls, Line was down. Government sent no instruction to public. I really had hope about this latest government, but I'm so disappointed. But hey... Thailand is getting casinos and online gambling 👍👍 for the poor to offload their pittances to the Chinese and Sino Thai.

I have two houses on a rai of land.  Who wants a condo?

Agree, and really are silly priced per m².   Good for those without a trusting partner, or simply wish to remain single.  A pool with no maintenance worries would be nice.

I'm not neighbor friendly, so not even a consideration.  I also need a proper kitchen, which is as large as some condos.

I'll buy a couple if they are going cheap enough.

I wouldn't mind one at Krung Thep, as hotel prices have skyrocketed, and visiting the kid gets expensive, just for a day visit and nice munch out, on her days off.

Aside from the 300 km drive, one way.

Something under 1M, with no amenities, so low maintenance fees.  Should be some nice sales coming up soon.

Under 1M will be a slum. Even outside central BKK and we'll away from transit lines. Prolly Bangna lots of cheapies. Air is horrible out there. BTS gets slummy after onnut which is not so special either

Sales of condo's will be coming down,

No they won't unless it's Chinese, foreign capitulation. Thais refuse to take a loss. They're still on the hook for short sale. There's no tax deduction for losses. They'll sit on it until the condo inflates to such a degree the price is acceptable.

Who would assume after one day... all buildings had been assessed and then make a judgement.

Can you share some links to these videos showing structural damage or "superstructure damage" of the many high rise buildings that have been weakened? (Aside from the six that were declared unsafe by the BMA).

Who actually, with any reliability and confidence, could assess all Bangkok high rise buildings for structural soundness in two/three days? If you believe this is possible then I've got a bridge in ..... to sell you.  It often takes weeks for civil engineers to evaluate a single entire building in the west.  Part of the problem IHMO is this snap declaration that all but 6 buildings are OK according to some local institution with vested interests in not uncovering a wide spread issue.

LOL.

"I know for a fact that many high rise buildings in Bangkok have been weakened by the earthquake and are now unsafe."

"How could you possibly know that high rise buildings are safe?"

Have a think about what you are saying...  🙄

Are you schizophrenic? That's the complete opposite of what you claimed earlier, you know, the nonsense that I replied to.

I asked you where are the videos of these buildings that are structurally damaged and have weakened superstructures. Your reply is that there has been no assessment. So why make the claim if you just made it up?

Thaier than Thai (whatever that means) for calling out lies. He said there are videos showing structurally weakened buildings with compromised superstructures. I just asked to see them. If he has seen them it shouldn't be difficult to share the links as that is all I was asking.

Then the backtracking and the personal attacks....

For a 7.7 magnitude earthquake, the other buildings were surprisingly robust. Compare, for example, with Turkey.

Date & Location Magnitude Deaths Buildings Destroyed/Damaged Notes
2004 – Indian Ocean (Sumatra) 9.1–9.3 ~230,000 total Millions affected; severe coastal destruction Tsunami hit multiple countries; ~8,000 deaths in Thailand
2011 – Tōhoku, Japan 9.0 ~19,300 >120,000 destroyed; ~278,000 damaged Caused tsunami and Fukushima nuclear disaster
2010 – Haiti 7.0 ~230,000–316,000 ~250,000 homes & 30,000 commercial buildings Devastated Port-au-Prince
2008 – Sichuan, China 7.9 ~87,000 Millions of buildings destroyed or damaged Massive destruction in mountainous areas
2001 – Gujarat, India 7.7 ~20,000 >400,000 homes destroyed or damaged Severely impacted Kutch region
1999 – İzmit, Turkey 7.4 ~17,840 Tens of thousands of buildings collapsed Widespread devastation in northwestern Turkey
2024 – Myanmar (Sagaing) 7.7 ~1,600+ (total) Significant infrastructure damage in Myanmar Felt across Southeast Asia; at least 17 killed in Thailand
2024 – Thailand (impact) 7.7 (Myanmar)  17+? Several buildings damaged; 30-story building collapsed in Bangkok Myanmar quake caused damage in Thailand

Me? No!!

Even Chiang Mai, the tall condo building opposite central festival shows crack up every side and has been evacuated.  Do folks that buy those highrise condos get earthquake insurance? If so has nay company paid off on a claim/claims?  Just wondering seeing the cost and then the government condemns the bldg!

Only that there wasn't a 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Thailand, it was 1200 km away in Myanmar

and yesterday a 5.5 wiped out the tall condo opposite central Festival in Chiang Mai!
