IRS to Lose Billions in Revenue If Migrants Stop Filing Taxes
Not survive, "Frank", but thrive. A country can survive without thriving. Take Russia for example. It still survives despite being an economic and political basket case. Without the nukes it would be like Saudi Arabia without the oil - nothing. The US OTOH, if it can keep it's vast pool of illegal workers doing the jobs no American wants, then it can thrive. The health of the US economy rests on the shoulders of the lazy, but at the same time job stealing, illegal immigrants. -

What would it actually take to elevate Thailand?
These comments are misguided if you ask me. Thailand has no problems worth fixing? really? No believes that not even Thai people. It's not true in Thailand or any other country for that matter. -

How about never? It's not in the nature of the people to create societies like Japan. Most people care content to get just by and do the minimum required to survive. This is common throughout the world in hot weather tropical countries. Even the plague of road safety doesn't seem to register with most people and just how bad it is. I don't think they have the tools in their culture to confront these issues even if they wanted to so I except it to stay the same. Seriously they've been driving for how long and haven't figured out how to enforce speed limits. If they haven't gotten it by now it's a choice. -

How come they don't understand that week-long water throwing is actually bad for business?
Thailand uses the Thai Solar calender. 543 years ahead of the Gregorian calender in 2025. Since Songkran is celebrating the Thai new year, I think you need to respect the fact that they have more than 500 years practice at defining their New Year celebrations. It is hard to argue that those practices have evolved for the better. The more traditional, pouring of water into the cupped hands and a bit of powder patted on to the faces of elders, a bit of water poured over Bhudda images, does still happen. My wife and I still get the traditional treatment from our grand kids. The more untraditional high powered water guns, buckets of dirty water with ice and drunken stupidity in the streets has been an unwelcome development however, no one will ever curtail that no matter how many times people are injured, blinded or killed. So in answer to your question Josie, they probably do understand but for many reasons, it is all just let go, in a Thai way of course. -

Laos entry stamp scam.
A better idea to avoid Laos as a destination. It's off my list now.
