Vietnam has declared April 4-5 as national mourning days in memory of Khamtay Siphandone, the former President of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party Central Committee. This gesture honours the special bond between Vietnam and Laos. During this period, government offices and institutions in Vietnam, including its overseas representatives, will fly flags at half-mast and observe mourning traditions, pausing public and celebratory events.

Khamtay Siphandone, born on February 8, 1924, passed away on April 2. As a key figure in the Lao revolutionary movement, he served as State President, Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of National Defense. His leadership was pivotal in achieving the Lao revolution's successes and steering the nation towards socialism.

Siphandone's enduring friendship with Vietnam significantly bolstered the two countries' relations, prompting Vietnam to express deep condolences over his loss. His passing marks both a personal and diplomatic loss for Laos and Vietnam, commemorated through this national period of mourning, reported VN Express.
