IPhones to Hit $3.5K? Trump Tariffs Spark Apple Revolt

Trump is a moron. It’s a total mess. As the Ford Motor chief executive Jim Farley courageously (compared to other chief executives) pointed out, “Let’s be real honest: Long term, a 25 percent tariff across the Mexico and Canada borders would blow a hole in the U.S. industry that we’ve never seen.”

So, either Trump wants to blow that hole, or he’s bluffing, or he is clueless. If it is the latter, Trump is going to get a crash course in the hard realities of the global economy as it really is — not how he imagines it.

Ecosystems? Listen a bit to Beinhocker, who is also the executive director of the Institute for New Economic Thinking at the Oxford Martin School. In the real world, he argues, “There is no such thing as the American economy anymore that you can identify in any real, tangible way. There’s just this accounting fiction that we call U.S. G.D.P.” To be sure, he says, “There are American interests in the economy. There are American workers. There are American consumers. There are firms based in America. But there is no American economy in that isolated sense.”

The old days, he added, “where you made wine and I made cheese, and you had everything you needed to make wine and I had everything I needed to make cheese and so we traded with each other — which made us both better off, as Adam Smith taught — those days are long gone.” Except in Trump’s head.

Instead, there is a global web of commercial, manufacturing, services and trading “ecosystems,” explains Beinhocker. “There is an automobile ecosystem. There’s an A.I. ecosystem. There’s a smartphone ecosystem. There’s a drug development ecosystem. There is the chip-making ecosystem.” And the people, parts and knowledge that make up those ecosystems all move back and forth across many economies.

As NPR noted in a recent story about the auto industry, “carmakers have built a vast, complicated supply chain that spans North America, with parts crossing back and forth across borders throughout the auto manufacturing process. … Some parts cross borders multiple times — like, say, a wire that is manufactured in the U.S., sent to Mexico to be bundled into a group of wires, and then back to the U.S. for installation into a bigger piece of a car, like a seat.”

Trump just waves off all of this. He told reporters that the U.S. is not reliant on Canada. “We don’t need them to make our cars,” he said. But here’s the catch. You cannot make complex stuff alone anymore. It’s too complex. And if you are not part of these ecosystems, your country will not thrive.”

And trust is the essential ingredient that makes these ecosystems work and grow, Beinhocker adds. Trust acts as both glue and grease. It glues together bonds of cooperation, while at the same time it greases the flows of people, products, capital and ideas from one country to the next. Remove trust and the ecosystems start to collapse.

Trust, though, is built by good rules and healthy relationships, and Trump is trampling on both. The result: If he goes down this road, Trump will make America and the world poorer. Mr. President, do your homework.

A very very typical response of an uninformed, low information Trump supporter.

I dont support Trump. You are beginning to sound like him.

Exactly he is loud mouthing the opposite way, and then blaming what he and 'they in general' always do at a 3X worse level. Same with burning down tesla's or company buildings, while they are stating they want a peaceful life with free money. Well sounds like a good job to then start destroying things and start with violence. Clearly they lack the intellectual capital and actual facts to do it another way.

What a wonder the tarrifs are now delayed 90 days to exactly that timeframe too... People who think politics are real, lol, wake up. We are playing the last few rounds of a chair dance, at best they can buy up to 2030.

Where did you hear the tariffs are delayed 90 days?

That was in the news, debunked by the Trump admin.

The wingnut conspiracy guys are claiming it was fake news released to create a momentary uptick in the markets which the Banksters could then short.

There is nothing in the market that upticks or banksters can short with that news, neither did any relieve come from that. So even if the 90 days hold up is delayed or not, has again zero to do with where the markets were going regardless. It is about the debts in countries, it needs to be reduced either way.

The fact gold is being sold off that hard, by large players, indicates the first big margin calls of the card house already started too. No wonder, what did you expect, that stocks were staying where they are, the economy just magically went on for 5-10 years more, if Biden would won?

There is nothing that proves excessive use of margins now.

Gold is sold for 2 reasons

It is at an all time high, so some profit taking is happening.

Profits on gold are taken to cover losses elsewhere.

It will go up in price again if Trump's madness continues.

Whenever Lutnick and Ron Vara open their gobs on cable news the markets go further south. Only Bennet offers any slight respite talking some sense, yet he has his hands tied by the boss so has to go down with the ship likewise.

You are speaking like this trader who just started 6 months ago, that is basic logic with profit taking. You clearly do not see what really is going on, same that you seem to forget that gold dumped 30% during the 2008 crisis. IT was only 2 years later, in 2011, that it actually reached a real ATH.

The reason for this is that the big players have leverage on leverage on leverage. They are always the first to need and close positions, that requires them to have cash, that forces them to sell (gold). This is when everything goes down in the same time, even dollars, you lose with anything.

This is the real way how they keep extracting money from all the normal people. The silent tax killer.

And that rally happened coincidental during the 7 minutes between the news being announced and then denied?

Be like like the “Boot Leg” era in the States.   Instead of Grog though you will get Speakeasy’s filled with smuggled imported goods.

Secret hideaways with IPhones, Computers and other contraband other Freedom loving Yanks, not in the know, will have to pay Trumps Tax on to access.

Looking forward to some old fashioned shootouts.   “Hand over those un-tarrifed bottles of Canadian Maple Syrup and Australian Beef” the FBI will say on a “steak out”.

Wow!  That sounds like those cigarettes' that are smuggled into New York state and New York City, with counterfit tax stamps!   Those "un-tarrifed" smoke sticks!

"New York has created a cigarette-smuggling empire, and the worst is yet to come. It’s the unavoidable consequence of the state’s decadeslong history of raising the cigarette tax, which Gov. Kathy Hochul wants to continue with an additional levy of $1 a pack. She also wants to ban flavored cigarettes. This will only lead to more lawbreaking and less tax revenue, defeating its purpose."

"... New York already imposes a statewide pack tax of $4.35 a pack, tied with Connecticut for highest in the nation (the District of Columbia’s tax is $4.50). New York City imposes additional excise taxes of $1.50 a pack."

Have you seen this?

"Is Motorola getting out of cell phones?

Eclipsed by Apple and other smartphone manufacturers, Motorola shed its money-losing consumer phone unit, including its signature Razr flip phone, along with its cell tower business and others, starting in 2008. (Motorola-branded phones are still for sale, but they're now made by Chinese computer giant Lenovo.)Jun 8, 2023"

Interesting that a 54% import tariff "could" increase the price by 218%. 😄

I picked up my 16 Pro Max a couple of weeks ago. Good phones. I predict they will sell well.

Old news.

The stable genius raised tariffs to 104%.

Oh, the winning!

As long as it keeps working, then it's good.   I had to replace my, I think, S9 Samsung phone last year.   The battery went bad when I was in Thailand and I had it replaced there.  I took it in to the place I bought it at for something, I forget what, they took the SIM card out and when they tried to put it back in, they broke something.   So they gave me a brand new phone to replace it.

Meanwhile, you can get Honghe 88's (similar taste to standard Marlboro) for about a buck a pack in the land of Mao.

It is great news if Apple is crushed. Overpriced toys for the rich that do nothing that cheaper products do as well.

Hmm, confused. I use my synced iPhone, iPad, MacBook Air even an old iPod and I am far from being a millionaire (OK, unless we use Thai baht equivalent). Happy camper. Full disclosure, I also own a very few shares of Apple stock.

Whatever gains Trump made among the young via his reversal on Tik-Tok, mostly likely he'll lose and then some as the cost of these devices soars.

His yet another reversal on the Tic Toc saga is typical of his lack of positive/decisive unambiguous direction.

The old military adage of "order, counter order, disorder" comes to mind.
