In a startling development, Ukrainian forces have captured two Chinese men fighting alongside Russian troops in the embattled Donetsk region. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the incident, revealing that intelligence suggests "significantly more" Chinese nationals might be participating with Russian forces. This revelation raises eyebrows concerning China's involvement, given its diplomatic support for Russia since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

China, which hasn't officially provided military support or weapons to Russia, is now under pressure to clarify its position. Zelenskyy has instructed his Foreign Minister to contact Beijing for an explanation, emphasising that Chinese citizens fighting in Ukraine undermines Beijing's claim to neutrality and its role as a responsible UN Security Council member.

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has summoned China's chargé d’affaires to demand clarification. The discovery of Chinese fighters in Donetsk is particularly concerning, considering China’s public stance for peace. Beijing has yet to comment on the situation, adding to the international intrigue.

Meanwhile, diplomatic tensions continue as Russia dismisses a U.S. proposal for a ceasefire, with both sides seemingly preparing for intensified military actions in the coming months. Analyst Nico Lange from the Center for European Policy Analysis notes the lack of indications towards a ceasefire, anticipating continued conflict.

During a press conference in Kyiv, Zelenskyy and visiting Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever discussed military cooperation. Belgium announced a 1 billion euro aid package to support Ukraine and explored joint investment in Ukraine’s defense sector.

In parallel, Russian Foreign Ministry officials are set for talks with U.S. counterparts in Istanbul, signaling attempts to address broader diplomatic issues between the nations, including the normalization of embassy operations.

The capture of Chinese fighters adds a complex layer to the geopolitical dynamics of the Ukraine conflict, challenging alliances and diplomatic positions while highlighting the unpredictable nature of the ongoing war.

The Chinese are extremely cautious. So if they took a side, it means that the Z guys can prepare for the most pleasant events.

They were probably Russian ethnic chinese of the Dungan people and the Ukrainians are too thick to know there's a Chinese ethnic minority in Russia.

Something seems off.  I listened to the released video.

Doesn't sound like a native Chinese speaker.  Sounds more like someone reading off a couple google-translate phrases.  Pronunciation was strange, and tones were incorrect.

I'd suspect he was probably one of the "North Koreans" from Los Angeles they announced last month, repurposed for more effective propaganda.

I agree they blamed the Russians.

You can't believe a word any Ukrainian tells you. They're liars, and masters of the most underhand fakery.

I suppose you believe they dived down and put an explosive charge on it ala James Bond?

The Nordstream pipeline that I worked on is

48" diameter x 38mm (1 1/2in) wall thickness of X80 (very high tensile) steel

It's also coated with 6" of concrete

I'm not an explosive expert but I would think your going to need a lot more boom than a diver can carry.

And no, they didn't use an internal pig, the open end is in russia 900km away

Simple divers in a rented boat without special gear that would raise suspicion planted enough explosives 90 meters deep to cause multiple 2.3 magnitude quakes measured in multiple neighboring countries, including Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Finland, and Norway?  Do you know how much a normal diver can carry 90 meters down?

Interesting you don't blame America.  Putin and every Russian propaganda organ went into overdrive blaming the US. Why? To split NATO, Putin's no. 1 prerogative since forever.

They took a simple boat to avoid suspicion. Obviously. But they had special gear allright. The explosives they used had to have been provided by the Ukrainian military.

30% of native Chinese don't even speak Mandarin, not to mention oft heavy  regional accents. How do you expect all common PLA soldiers to speak clear enunciated central Mandarin? Better to make up a story about Los Angeles.

Funny all those North Koreans disappeared suddenly, and the alleged POW's are nowhere to be seen.  Same with these two alleged Chinese.  It'll be in all the papers, the Pentagon will be shocked, shocked I say, and will respond to questions with "we have seen reports", but nothing tangible.  And when it fails to gain traction, it'll disappear like the Ghost of Kiev and the Martyrs of Snake Island.

As to the non-Chinese speaking Chinese, shirley, you must admit Xi is an evil dictator, running an oppressive totalitarian regime, especially for the oppressed minorities under his boot.  Why then would he send them to Western Russia where they can defect to the forces of light?  Wouldn't it be better to save them for the anticipated invasion of Siberia?

Sounds like you were there, or a GRU beeper? Ukraine has weightless explosives?

if it was Ukraine, more power to them. Unfortunately it remains a mystery outside propaganda channels. There are three contending theories:

1. Putin, to split NATO, his no 1 priority. Why not, NS was already closed.

2. Ukraine, to make it much harder for the EU to help Ukraine fight Russia.

3. US, to shift more of the burden defending Ukraine to the US.

Christ, if they picked up a British soldier, at any point in history, you would hear a stunning range of accents and patois, and varying commands of English.

Wellington called them the Scum of the Earth, and was proud of them, in response to a French officer pointing out the educational differences between British and French troops.

As is true in many wars, mercenaries are attracted by on the one hand, wanting to fight the good fight (George Orwell in Spain) and those just in for the money ("Colonel" Callan in Angola). The latter often attracts individuals from the more deprived parts of society, with or without military experience. I'm sure the PLA, like all other armies, includes recruits who were otherwise ne'er do wells. Not all join for King/President/Flag/Country. So it make sense that a couple of Chinese nationals rocking up in Ukraine are a few bottles short of a 6-pack. I would say the same for some of the Brits going there; if I was being generous, some seem to be looking for adventure after a mediocre life. There are exceptions of course.

No it does not remain a mystery. It is very much a non-mystery. The Ukrainian involved bragged about the operation and admitted he was involved.

The Ukrainians did it. No doubt at all.
