Has anyone heard about getting a non-imm 'O' visa in Penang without showing 'money in the bank' but having a letter of guarantee from someone at home (i.e. UK) guaranteeing that should you require hospitalisation, medical bills or repatriation etc. the guarantor will pay all expenses. I've been assured that this is legit. Will post more when I have more details.

I have a totally contrary experience. In January of this year I obtained an "O" solely upon production of my Thai marriage certificate.

Scouse.

Mostly it does work that way Scouse. Consuls may see that continual multi entries by an applicant is indicative of avoiding financial requirements for retirement or marriage. That may give rise to ' queries ' as to an individuals financial capability.
