Speaking of pineapples, they are no longer produced in America, Hawaii.

I think they have been outsourced to Beijing, or some place.

The French are the barbarians, these days, particularly the Parisians.

Pineapples are still produced in Hawaii for the fresh fruit market. The proportion of canned pineapple has declined significantly. High labor costs are to blame.

An American describing the French as barbarians is like a Viking berserker calling a fencer unsophisticated.

They say ignorance is bliss. That would probably be your answer.

Most people only see what the news shows them and forget that any news coming from inside China is changed to show them in a good way. Completely altering the real facts. I lived there 5 years and know how hard it is to live for the Chinese. Even as a married couple, both have to work 2 full time jobs to pay bills and have money to save for their kids. Or one job that requires them there for 12 to 14 hours.

For a foreigner visiting, they see the good side, Pretty malls with people happily walking around. But the underside not seen by tourists is a hard life already. As you said, kids study 12 hours a day and when they complete their schooling it is very difficult to find work. China is actively trying to stop people from leaving China. My friend who is a teacher there says China took all the Chinese teachers passports for fear they will not return. He has tried several times to get it back but to no avail.

Lol. Nonsense. Just because you know someone that wants to leave doesn’t mean everyone is wanting the same. Plenty of videos on YouTube recently from Americans learning the truth from the average Chinese on Little Red Book.

If you want to know what expensive is, go live in Hkg or Singapore.

IMO, the China problem is that the Chinese (or any other non-white country) may not overtake America in terms of living standards (individually) or power (as a country).

IMO, the China problem is that the white man cannot accept that a non-white can be intellectually or technologically superior to him. Something to do with prejudice, bigotry and racism.

Do you always take EVERYTHING you read so very literally?

Run Spot Run.

After the third grade, readers begin to read in a more nuanced way.

We learn about things like understatement, hyperbole, satire, irony, and other means of expression that can deliver the message that might not be possible in a totally literal way.

I wonder if some here might have a problem understanding irony.

Please. What you wrote wasn't even remotely adjacent to the truth and did echoes what I've read racists post in this forum.

Beijing doesn't produce pineapples, too cold. I have seen pineapples being sold for 10 rmb (1.36 USD) for a whole fruit, too low value for Beijing to really care about.

Short Boeing stock.

Boeing stock:  first, the damage has been done, I think. It was at these levels during COVID, down substantially from its all time high. And for what it's worth, it still might be an excellent stock to trade, for anyone interested in making some easy money every day. Back then, the COVID lockdowns were on and I was stuck in the US with not much to do.  Scalping Boeing stock was easy money.  Buy 1000 shares, a minute later sell 1000 shares and you could be done for the day, or not, depending. Actually, it was bouncing around so much you'd sometimes only have to hold it for 30 seconds.

As for the current stand-off Trump has with China?  This Boeing thing is a non-event. The entire situation will be resolved long before Chinese deliveries will have any appreciable long term impact on Boeing stock or its bottom line.

I see China's move as an act of desperation. They think they're hurting America, when all they're really doing is showing a weak hand.

Some expats live here in Thailand on 20,000 baht a month. Some spend that on just electricity alone. How much it costs you bear very little relevance. Were you living in a first tier city? Do you eat local or western food? Do you own a car or take the subway?

I went as a tourist but stayed some time in a friend’s apartment in Chongsan. He lives in Melbourne but couldn’t tell me how his utilities bill (water, electricity, internet) costs him as the amount is too insignificant.

What I do know is that good high quality Chinese food such as roast quail, Peking Duck, fresh fish, oysters etc costs less than it does in Chiang Mai and Bangkok.

For a typical apartment with 3 occupants, say, monthly bill (1 USD = 7.32 rmb):

- water 80-100 rmb

- electricity 150 - 500 rmb, depending on how much you run the Aircon in the summer, and the heater in the winter

- gas (as in natural gas, most homes, apartments use gas for cooking and hot water) 150-250 rmb

Wow really?  And you do not think for a minute that those YouTube Vdos are not propaganda?  Did you know YouTube is banned and blocked by the Chinese firewall? Anything posted in there is going to be approved by the government. Or made by one of their lackeys.

Once again you show ignorance in this topic. The average person does not even know about VPN and in case you did not know. You can only put a VPN app on your phone or pc from outside of China. I know because my friend who is a teacher tried many times. The VPNs that are allowed. Are permitted by the government which can block them at anytime. They are all blocked (even foreigners visiting or living there) when the government has their high official meetings in Beijing and nothing can get you online using them.

Schools are given limited VPN that are seriously censored.

The average educated Chinese is very aware of VPNs, they are not stupid.

All it takes is for someone in China to know 1 person who has a VPN in China. He can then use that VPN to download and install his own VPN. A typical Chinese person has tons of friends, family, coworkers, acquaintances.

I am telling you, I am in China right now, using a VPN, and I can access YouTube just fine!  In the words of Elon: you are truly a more on.

I didn't mention Canada. Are you hearing voices?

All Trump needs to do is to threaten AirBus Europe with raising Tariffs to 500-percent, for EU aircraft, unless they cooperate in ceasing all dealings with China, and China Gov.

This is no laughing matter.

What an idiotic suggestion that even Trump would realise is totally and utterly MAD.

You can not base your knowledge as a tourist. It may be a fraction of the cost as a foreigner travelling.  I lived there 5 years. Paid rent and electric.. Minimum spending without drinks and women or other pleasantries cost me over 6000 CNY a month.  That does not include food or clothing.  My friends who still live there are now paying even more. His average monthly bill is over 7000 RMB.. Without travel or fun.

I lived there for 15 years.  Raising a family for a Chinese on 7000 is super easy, barely an inconvenience.

Remember, we're basing our anecdotal comments on our experiences as a stranger living in a strange land.  We know Thais can live in Thailand on less that what foreigners demand.  That also applies to China.

And China is big place, with many regions.  Living expenses are much lower outside of Beijing and Shanghai.  Those would be equivalent to Manhattan and San Francisco.

This is the old argument over how many bath you need to live in Thailand.  Some need 199K/month for hookers and blow, others are quite content with their lifestyle spending 20K.

With the latest orders and deliveries numbers, Boeing’s backlog of orders now stands at 5,626 jets, up from 5,324 a year ago.

Not too shabby, but still....

"As of March 31, 2025, Airbus reported a backlog of 8,720 jets, of which 7,696—or 88.9%—were A220 and A320 family narrowbodies."

Seriously, man?  "Beijing" doesn't produce pineapples?  That's like saying Washington, DC doesn't grow oranges.

Look to the southern provinces for pineapples, durian, jackfruit, bananas, coffee, chocolate.  Half of Hainan Island is pineapple plantation.......Picture078.jpg.06565f440ab4098617a4417ac8dfe6df.jpg

I think what you meant to say is that the average person DOES know about VPN's, as for a time they were offered on Taobao.  Many people use them, as they are not illegal.

Yes, it can be difficult at times, especially during the party congressess.  Downloading and installing is possible, as evidenced by the hundreds of millions using them.

Yes, I went to China and installed a VPN there.

At first used one of the free ones (UB-something) that you could download onto a USB stick and use in the internet cafes.

Later used ExpressVPN on the annual payment plan as they were one of the best at circumventing the great firewall.  They maintain anonymous download sites that cannot all be blocked.  They have a crack team of coders that can break through the upgraded firewall before the end of the congress sessions.

Letsvpn is the one that has never gone down. May or may not be monitored by the government, but as long as you aren't politically active, who cares

Desperation? It looks more like China is adapting and moving on, while the real damage is happening inside the U.S. Trump’s policies, especially his sweeping tariffs, are doing more to hurt the American economy than anyone abroad. Since January, we’ve seen business investment drop as companies freeze hiring and delay expansion. Major manufacturers are laying off workers due to rising costs and disrupted supply chains. U.S. exports are taking a hit as other countries retaliate with tariffs of their own, pricing American goods out of key markets.

Wall Street is jittery, with markets swinging wildly every time a new trade threat is announced. The dollar has weakened, Treasuries are underperforming, and global confidence in the U.S. economy is slipping. Tourism is down, international students are pulling back, and consumer confidence has hit its lowest point in years. Even sectors that once thrived under open trade: tech, autos, agriculture, are now shedding jobs and facing mounting losses.

So no, China doesn’t need to take down the U.S. economy. Trump’s doing it just fine on his own.

I agree with most of that you say, but I also think none of that matters right now. China is the one thing that Trump won't fold on. At least not until he has to, and I think the US Fed has enough firepower to hold on until China folds. People who think that China is "adapting and moving on" are part of the same crowd that has been brainwashed by the mainstream propaganda machine operating around the world.

China is in worse shape than you seem to think. Their economy is highly dependent on the US consumer and on consumers around the world. But the key is the US consumer.  China cannot "move on" without the United States and its consumers. As for consumers in the rest of the world?  They, too, don't live in a vacuum.  Most of their economies are on life support and in much worse shape than the USA. Germany is headed for bankruptcy. The UK is broke. France is a mess.  Japan is in trouble as well.  In other words, the EU is already dead in the water and Japan doesn't have enough consumers to make much of a difference, given their economy. And never forget, the entire world runs on US dollars, a currency which cannot be replaced anytime soon.

So, despite the Chicken Littles, the sky is not falling.  China has a weak hand.  You really don't want to find out what happens if Trump folds because of a bond market collapse.
