Been there. Great little town. Kamphaeng Phet is good too. Hated Phimai though. They key for me is nice restaurants and good hotel options.

. Additionally, Si Satchanalai Historical Park deserves a look.....About 20-30k from Sukhothai.....More charm than Sukhothai & about the same size....

I preferred Sukhothai. Free entry after 5pm and a night market nearby.

If you don't have an interest in old wats / historical ruins then this is not the place for you. We do, and had a great 3 nights here. Stayed at Baan Khung Thara Ayutthaya
บ้านคุ้งธารา อยุธยา on the river bank in one of their bungalows, nice place, nice people, quiet, had 3 real good restaurants within 5 minutes walk, and would definitely return.

You could also stay longer in Ayutthaya by using it as a base to visit the towns in the hour in a 90 minute radius after seeing the sights in Ayutthaya. Personally, I loved it in Ayutthaya.

I agree with you on Si Satchanalai. Been a couple of times over the years. Hire a bicycle outside the park for pennies, ride around visiting the ruins, every time I've been I've been one of the few people visiting (just the way I like it). Really great place. Once stayed at the Sukhothai airport hotel (really nice) which is about half way between Sukhothai and Si Satch and a great place for visiting both places.

On of our pilgrimages to Chiang Mai, I had decided to do a slow crawl up from Bangkok after the initial three night immersion in the "Big Mango", rather than hop on an Air Asia flight BKK-CNX.

Itinerary was to be as follows:

Mini-bus from Bangkok to Damnoen floating market then on to Kanchanburi for a two night stay.

Mini-bus from Kanchanaburi to Ayutthaya for a two night stay.

Train from Ayutthaya to  Phitsanulok for a one night stay.

Minibus from Phisanulok to Sukothai for a two night stay.

Coach from Sukothai to Chiang Mai for the duration of the stay.

 

Kanchanaburi is well worth a further visit as we only got as far as the terminus at Nam Tok using the "Death Railway".

 

Ayutthaya ended up being a one night stay, there was no appeal, the Pasak river (A tributary to the Chao Phraya that forms the "old city" island, was putrid and stank. The levels of strewn trash was astounding.

 

Phitsanulok was a surprise, as it is considered a junction stop type of place.

The Nan riverside is nicely maintained and, coincidentally, had a great food / music festival during the visit.

 

Old Sukhothai (Historical Park) as opposed to Sukothai Meuang (The New City), was a fantastic slow paced relaxing atmosphere, conveyance on bicycles, and watch ones stresses wash away.

The mrs loves all kinds of temples. I can see they have old and new. We have been to most of the famous ones plus many more.

Spent one day/night there a few months back and loved the place. Wasn't long enough, needed another couple of days at least. Recommend a trip up the river at dusk, just as all the temples are beginning to light up. Stayed at a hotel on the river with a stunning view of one of these temples opposite. Much better than Chiang Mai in my opinion and only a three hour drive from Pattaya. I'll definitely pay another (longer) visit sometime. Reading up on its history beforehand, made it more interesting for me.
