A 71-year-old woman has been arrested on 18 April, for stealing a bag from a Chinese tourist while she was shopping at a popular shopping mall in central Bangkok.

Police Major General Siam Boonsom, Commander of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, along with Deputy Commander Police Major General Nopasin Poolsawat, and Police Colonel Sirichat Janpromma, Superintendent of Pathumwan Police Station, had ordered the arrest of Ms. Weena, also known as “Wee”, aged 71.Ms. Weena was arrested at approximately 18:05, on Rama IV Road near Soi 47 in the Thung Maha Mek area of Sathorn District.

The suspect was apprehended with several items in her possession, including ten Chinese banknotes (six 20-yuan and four 5-yuan notes), a credit card from a Chinese bank, and a pink Louis Vuitton bag. These items were found in her possession during a search of her home. Also found was a blue cloth bag, which contained the clothes she had worn during the theft.

The incident had began on 16 April at 16:35, when a 28-year-old female tourist from China filed a complaint with Pathumwan Police Station. She reported that while shopping earlier, on the first floor of CentralWorld shopping centre, someone had stolen her bag, which she had placed on the counter as she answered a phone call. The bag contained approximately 20,000 baht in Thai currency, 800 yuan in Chinese currency, and a Chinese bank credit card.

Police investigators reviewed CCTV footage from the scene and surrounding areas, identifying a woman matching the description given by the victim: Thai, plump build, approximately 70–75 years old, wearing pink spectacles, a green and white shirt, and green trousers with gold chain patterns.

The suspect was later identified and spotted near Rama IV Road, leading to her arrest and search of her home. The search recovered the stolen items, including the foreign currency and credit card. Ms. Weena confessed to the theft, claiming it was a spontaneous act driven by impulse and desire.

She has been charged with theft and was handed over to investigators, along with the evidence, for further legal proceedings.
