Re-entry Permit when getting a new passport.

My passport expires in November next year (2026) I am going back to the UK in October this year, and I will obviously get a re-entry permit in my current passport before I go (NON-IMM based on marriage)

 

I am thinking of using the one week service to renew my passport while I am there, but I do not know how that effects my return to Thailand with the re-entry permit if I do. Will I be able to enter on my new passport showing the re-entry permit in the old passport or not.

 

I understand that if I can, I will need to go to immigration later and have all my stamps transferred to my new passport, which I have done before; but if getting a new one will cause issues, I can wait and get a new one from here next year … thanks for any advice.

You will enter on the new passport using the re-entry permit in the old.  No problem at all.

Show both passports on entry, immigration officer will stamp in your new passport.

 

Visit immigration with both passports and get your stamps transferred.

 

It's actually pretty painless.

That's exactly what you do 

No issue. 

You can attend your immigration office after return and have stamps etc transferred. No urgency. 

Which immigration office.

OP, here is thread outlining process for transfer and form some immigration offices use.

I posted in that thread CW are now asking to see updated bankbook + photocopies of pages back to last extension.

Absolutely, this has been the case since they stopped doing them at the embassy many years ago. The UK Passport Office seems to have remarkably stepped their incompetence up a notch.

 

Get your new passport in the UK if possible.

It was what I was hoping for, and it is logical, but being Thailand I needed to check; yes I have read some of the stories about renewing from here which is why I want to do it when I get back to London

Thanks; yes, I can use the one week service for an extra fee and get an appointment prior to getting back, and I am near London which helps (Freedom pass on the train)

I am sure you know this already but "You can book an appointment up to 3 weeks in advance."

There is no stated limit.

Some folk leave it till such time as they have an additional reason to go to immigration. 

If attending immigration office isn't a huge deal then best to do the transfer as soon as you have time.

Obviously any international travel would require you carry both passports.

 

Note: also next time near bank update your new pp # with them.

You can skip TDL update as the new pp has noted reference to previous pp #

In Sept 23 I went back to the UK to renew my passport and used the one week service. I did it at Liverpool and went reasonably well, new passport in 5 days. The one thing that caught me out was at Liverpool i was told the old passport would probably be about 10 days later than the new passport. That was a bit disconcerting as I had assumed they would come together and the timeframe went past my return to Thailand.

I decided to apply for a new visa which only took 48 hours, sod's law being what it is, my old passport came back the day I got the visa.

I then had the choice, return on the re-entry permit or the new visa, I decided on the new visa. Came back and did my marriage extension at the 90 days, about same time as original would have expired. No stamp transfer, TM30 or 90 day required, despite what many will imply, there is no "starting over", the process is the same.

Depending on your circumstances and whether you already have the re-entry permit, it may be worth considering a new visa.

Indeed, I had booked and paid for mine before I left Thailand, although my slot was still available the day before.

Even though 5pm on a Friday evening didn't appear to be popular, still took an hour to be seen, about 6.30 before I came out.

Good point that!  I think I'd go for the 1 day premium service.  I've done that before and you collect old and new together.

Thanks, that’s a good flag about the return of the old passport. I had assumed, like yourself, that they would be returned together; however, I will be back there for a month and intended to make a prior appointment for a couple of days after I get back, so should be safe.

 

I prefer to keep my marriage extension as it is; it has worked well enough for the last 6 years doing it ourselves, and you know what they say about something that isn’t broken, but thanks for the heads up.

I got married in 2008 and did the first 6 years on ME visas, go back to UK every year. Started marriage extensions in 2014 and a couple of retirements before the embassy threw the toys out of the pram. For one reason or another have had a few new visas during that time, it's no big deal.

Each to their own with what's most comfortable. Good luck with passport.

I had intended that, but when I went the premium service had been suspended due to high demand, not an option at that point in time.

Think it was out for about 3 months.
