April 21, 2025Apr 21 The only way to know how a certain place is, is to go there and spend as much time as you can afford. Taking other's advice isn't a help, as they might have different views on what makes a place good or bad, tastes in food, scenery, nightlife, climate etc. Reviews are helpful if you see the majority saying the same things, but they still aren't you. If 30 people say a restaurant is dirty, with lousy food and service, and 3 say it's fine, you can pretty much be assured it isn't a good place to go, but if the positives far outweigh the negatives, and that place has food you like, it's worth a try. The same with visiting a country, although it's a lot more expensive so you might want to look at what's available that you might like, then look at reviews to see what others have said, then make a decision, taking a chance if it fits you.

I don't have any, but my family does, along with many of my friends. I wore singlets when I power lifted, so what's the deal with them? And flying economy makes you a peasant? I thought it was a way to save money you could use for other things. And you keep using the word academic to discuss things that haven't anything to do with academics.

You see some in Isaan, and can guess they may have been bar girls, but times change, and more and more here are adopting more western values and ideas, so you never know.

Teaching isn't brain washing. I don't look at people as sheep, although many are followers. My duty as a Christian is to spread the word, but not to be pushy.

I would also add that as good as Thai cuisine is, Indonesian and Balinese cuisine is a cut above Thai cooking. Bali also has a spiritual vibe most of Thailand has lost already. Better coffee too. It was sad to see Indonesia abandon its country to the Chinese at Lake Toba and to assorted Australians and Russians in Bali now, their presence degrades Bali significantly. However, if I had to leave Thailand Bali would be top of the list.
April 21, 2025Apr 21 Until I opened a Thai bank account, I used to change sterling at one of the many FX kiosks. Not once did anyone attempt to short-change me. In 2018, I spent 3 months mainly in Sanur, on the south-east coast of Bali. Almost every time I exchanged currency, there was an attempt to short-change me. One of the tricks they employed was to try and pay me in low-denomination notes, making it more difficult to check the amount. On another occasion, with the FX rate clearly displayed, and a notice claiming "No commission" the man tried hid darndest to fiddle me. I had put 2 £50 notes under a rock on his counter. He was putting bundles of IDR on the counter but, as I was counting them, in my peripheral vision I noticed he was removing some which I had already counted. When I challenged him, he said, "I have to make a little commission!" I swiftly retrieved my 2 £50 notes and walked away. On the subject of food, I thought that the fare may have been even more diverse than here in Thailand --- what a misconception that turned out to be? A lot of the meals seemed to be topped off with the same boring sauce/gravy. Also, because there is a hefty import tax, or so I was told, the Aussie steaks were more expensive than some here in Thailand.
