A 45-year-old man, identified as Phanom, was arrested in Lop Buri province following a crossbow attack on his brother-in-law, leaving the victim seriously injured. The incident occurred on April 21 in Bang Phung subdistrict, with the arrest made the following day.

Police Colonel Supakorn Onsu-wan, superintendent of Baan Mi Police Station, reported that the assault unfolded around 8pm as the victim, 41-year-old Anon, was drinking outside his home. Tensions between the neighbours had been escalating, largely due to allegations that Anon had harassed Phanom’s wife and daughter during the Songkran festival, claims Anon denies.

Phanom, serving as a respected village headman, allegedly used a crossbow to shoot Anon, striking him in the back. Despite Anon's serious injuries, he was swiftly transported to the hospital. Phanom contends that the discharge was accidental, asserting that he intended only to threaten Anon with the weapon.

The crossbow, acquired by Phanom for 4,500 baht (around US$135), uses a 40-centimetre dart propelled by an elastic band. While the weapon is legal to possess since it isn't classified under firearm laws, Phanom acknowledged its potential danger when mishandled.

The police are pursuing legal action against Phanom for his role in the incident, underscoring the serious nature of attacks involving weapons, even those not strictly regulated by law. The case highlights the importance of resolving personal disputes through peaceful means and the tragic consequences of failing to do so.
