In a significant discovery, a warehouse in Samut Sakhon has been found storing illegally imported salted pig intestines from China, valued at over 10 million baht (approximately US$300,390). The facility, located in the Mueang subdistrict of Krathum Baen district, was in a state of disrepair, marked by a pervasive foul odour due to decomposing animal parts.

 

Acting on a tip-off, police officers, led by Police Major General Thatphum Jaruprach, and in collaboration with the Department of Livestock Development, executed a search warrant from the Samut Sakhon Provincial Court. The raid, conducted on April 28, exposed the unlawful storage and distribution operation.

 

The warehouse, identified as number 340, was littered with dirt, leaves, and numerous drums and fertiliser sacks. Tables bore decomposing intestines, contributing to the strong stench. Upon inspection, officials found 514 sacks within the drums, each containing around 80 kilogrammes of salted pig intestines.

 

 

 

These products, linked to online sales and distribution networks reaching sausage factories across Thailand, had not undergone the requisite health inspections, posing a significant public health risk. The potential contamination with pathogens due to the lack of proper authorisation was a major concern.

 

During the inspection, no individuals were present to claim the warehouse or its contents. Police inquiries revealed the premises were rented by a Chinese national named Chen, who purportedly used it to store fresh food items like salted and processed intestines for restaurants.

 

Authorities have seized the inventory as evidence and are conducting tests on the intestines to verify their type and health safety, checking for any infectious diseases. Legal action against those involved is underway as the investigation continues, highlighting the ongoing efforts to crack down on illegal imports and ensure consumer safety in Thailand.

Probably a stupid question, but doesn't Thailand have its own pigs with intestines?  Or is it simply a matter of saving a few baht by importing intestines that have not been properly inspected?
