Thai PM Confident in US Tariff Talks Ahead of Trump's Deadline

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra expressed optimism on Tuesday regarding the ongoing negotiations with the United States over impending tariff hikes, assuring that an agreement would be reached before President Donald Trump's extended deadline.

Negotiations were temporarily halted after Thai officials in the US advised a review of specific issues before finalising a deal. This led Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira to cancel a scheduled trip to Washington on April 23.

Despite the setback, Paetongtarn remains confident that both nations can resolve the details before the new deadline. Originally, a 36% tariff on Thai goods was slated to commence on April 9. The Prime Minister downplayed concerns surrounding potential "secret deals" with the US, which critics fear could later be used against her administration. She stressed that certain details must remain confidential or disclosed at appropriate times.

Last year, Thailand's trade surplus with the US reached approximately US$45.6 billion, highlighting the significance of these negotiations on both economies.

In another development, the Bank of Thailand's northern office reported that, in the first quarter, the economic situation mirrored trends seen across the country. While the agricultural and tourism sectors are projected to grow in the second quarter, industry and private investments may experience stagnation due to ongoing global trade and tariff concerns.

I wonder how they will work-out Thailands luxury tax on imported items and Thailands penchant for helping Chinese companies use Thailands ports for dodging tariffs?

So promised to buy some of his bitcoin stuff so he become a zillionaire Trump is a crook TIT

She has nothing to worry about at all.  The orange village idiot signs lots of paperwork ,yet has acheived not a thing.  Typical blowhard schoolyard bully,  all bluster ,no balls.

It wouldn't be difficult to announce zero tariffs on American imports, which would still be more expensive than Chinese or domestic products. If Thai consumers don't want to buy American products what is the next move?

pretty smart someone made a anti-Trump propaganda app. Haha, I hope you enjoy all it supplies you. Does not really matter if there will be no truth involved in what is posted in it.

The fact that Trump, who is a terrible negotiator, has not put together a single deal yet, does not bode well for Thailand.

Better to just establish other markets, and completely spurn the US. Let them isolate themselves into oblivion.

"Trump is weak.  We'll just keep screwing the US on tariffs and they won't do anything in return.  Ha ha ha"

Trump is not negotiating the deals. There are professionals who are doing it. People who made their wealth from  extracting as much money from vulnerable companies and investors as they  could.

Wow.

How can anyone defend this  response?   I interpret to mean that  they bungled and that the conditions would cause an uproar in Thailand. Her government is most likely now going to the impacted  Thai monopolies to inform them that their protected status  may be eroded.  Obviously afraid of the terms and conditions  going forward and too cowardly to be honest with the Thai people.

It identifies which supermarket items are from america; should the more discerning shopper wish to avoid buying american produce.

The bar code system and product labels provide the facts, and I expect them to be more truthful than most politicians.
