Throughout most of my life (now 80+) I have relied on a paracetamol tablet taken with a hot drink (coffee, tea, squash, water etc.) to relieve the symptoms. Yes, I have had flu vaccinations and spent a couple of days indoors until the symptoms ease. This is my personal choice and it suits me after so many years. I hate facemasks and never wear them unless mandated to do so.

I'm still feeling rough, sore throat, but less congested. Started to get a non-productive cough last night that kept me up. I've still got body aches.  

It feels worse that the previous time I had covid. 

Anyway, I'll quarantine myself for 10 days just to be sure that when I go outside I'm no longer contagious.

Many years ago when I was an ED nurse, anyone with a sniffle was tested for influenza A, the idea being if they were positive they would be given Tamiflu. Tamiflu was as effective as a placebo, but it was the new thing.

It's about time Western medicine and health authorities got over themselves with this nonsense. That having been said, I note many Thais will go to a hospital or clinic for the most minor of ailments. 

It seems 3 billion years of commonsense and a bit of self-care is trumped by a visit to a clinic and a prescription for the A to Z of what probably doesn't do very much!

 

 

 

The best way to deal with viruses is to quarantine as soon as you think you're sick.

That way you stop the virus in its tracks (with you). 

If everyone did that then viruses would have very little opportunity to spread. 

Unfortunately most people are too selfish to think about anyone but themselves; or they are too stupid to understand why they should quarantine.

However, it is the spike in cases among very young children, aged 0 to 4, that is raising special concern, with 682 cases identified.

 

Dr Thira has highlighted these dynamics to alert public health officials and the general public about the broader implications of this trend. He pointed out that between 4th and 7th May, Covid-19 cases were roughly double the number of influenza cases, spotlighting the severity of the current outbreak. In this period, there were 2,593 Covid-19 cases compared to 1,321 influenza cases.

 

Worryingly, there has also been one recorded Covid-19-related death during this timeframe. The health expert warns that individuals showing symptoms right now have a two-to-one likelihood of having Covid-19 over influenza, with an estimated 67% chance of contracting the virus if symptomatic.

 

In response to this renewed threat, Dr Thira stressed the importance of targeted precautions for vulnerable groups such as young children, school students, the elderly, and those already hospitalised. He advises that individuals, particularly those working, should make health assessments a routine to ensure both personal safety and the safety of others. Dr Thira also recommends routine screening for inpatients and those scheduled for surgery, helping to safeguard patients and medical staff within healthcare facilities.

 

He further called on educational institutions, childcare centres, elderly care facilities, and hospitals to adopt and enforce effective risk management strategies promptly. Quick action is necessary, he emphasised, to prevent a broader outbreak that could affect diverse age groups. The call for vigilance and proactive measures aligns with a global understanding that pandemic control requires collective effort and community-wide commitment.

We're not talking about flu symptoms but the danger to tackle with LONG COVID and ME/CFS, an autoimmune problem. And no medication.

That is why a vaccination is a must.

Correct; this has always been the challenge of a flu rapid test. They exist, but there is no big market for them, because for most doctors, they are pointless.

 

Any diagnostic test has use if it produces an actionable outcome, ie does the test tell the doctor anything different from what they would have done anyhow.

 

A patient comes in with the sniffles. The doctor takes a tests. Its not flu; instruction to the patient, go home and take Lemsip. Its flu; go home and take Lemsip. Anti-virals have a really narrow window of efficacy, and are a waste of time for the majority of cases

 

The procalcitonin or PCT test, has been a rip rawing success. The PCT test is a rapid test that can differentiate between a bacterial or a viral infection. Before, the doctor was pressured into writing a script for antibiotics. Now he has a test to tell the patient that they don't have a bacterial infection, and antibiotics would be pointless,

 

The best use case for a rapid test is cardiac marker testing. You have a "heart attack". Properly done, the paramedic will be doing a series of quick blood tests, so by the time you arrive at ER, there is already a plan how to treat you, because time is of the essence.

 

During the Pandemic, at least for part of it, there was a case for mass rapid testing, because there was still a great deal of uncertaintyl. Now, that case has considerably weakened; for most people a positive diagnosis of COVID would lead to the same outcome as the common cold, flu etc. You take yourself to bed.

 

Just before COVID, there was a lot of work going on to identify the biomarkers found in people who really suffer with the flu. For most people , flu is a minor illness  but for some, it really is a killer.  You can draw general inferences about age, obesity, general health, but there are significant exceptions. eg the 100 year old lung cancer patient, for whom COVID-19 was nothing, through to the young person is apparent great physical health who succumbs.

 

Biomarker tests have great potential to actually identify those at most risk. All those morbidities might be related to the same biomarkers.

My Good and well trained Pharmacist told me that this latest version is not so much Problem, on it's own. But she said that there might be a Problem if you get it along with the Flue at the same time. ! ? ... Test kits that test for both.

Me Positive, the others in my Family clearly Negative. ... Sticking the collection Probe up your nose is the only hard part.

 

... I had a Lung congestion for almost a month, (I have had it before and call it a Beer Cough ?) ... so well I was just working on it, ...  But then I got a very runny nose and well ? I think this is the Big Hint re this new version ???

Kindly allow me to step in right there, you didn’t really “have” to go to the hospital did you ? You and your family have common respiratory infection symptoms. I would suggest only worth visiting a Doctor if any of those symptoms persist or become worrying. A cough, sore throat and runny nose are best treated by home rest and if necessary, can be supplemented by a visit to your local pharmacy. 
 

Be careful not to fall into the Thai hypochondriac mindset, and start running to the Doctor demanding 8 different and useless medicines whenever you are feeling a little bit off colour.

 

After recent events, I was completely unsurprised to note that, as the Thai press had dug up and published articles about Earthquake Dizziness Syndrome, it became the latest de rigueur medical condition in my office. Quite impressive, as it had previously only ever been diagnosed in areas suffering from major, multiple and long running after shocks (think Ring of Fire) , so absolutely nothing at all like what we experienced in Bangkok then….

I'm actually going to spend some time putting together a number of pieces of research so everything can be taken in context, rather than just bombard readers with statistics, however I will post one article here to get started.

I make the above statement because there are so many cofounders, especially in the recording of the infection fatality rate, and here are 2 examples. 1. How death from/with Covid is measured. As far as I am aware every country that recorded data included death by all cause within a given period where the deceased was seropositive, so a 21 year old who dies in a car crash who was infected but may have shown no symptoms was recorded as a Covid death. 2. Elderly. In the early days, well the first year, because of the massive amount of misinformation, many elderly people in hospitals and care homes were prescribed 'end of life' medication, because it was believed that Covid was terminal. The 'end of life' medication, which was mostly midazolam and morphine, both respiratory depressants, undoubtedly lead to the premature deaths of many. Would these people have died anyway within say a year...probably, however at the time the huge spike in elderly deaths caused by mismanagement skewed the IFR statistics leading the world to believe Covid was far more serious than it was. I'll probably add a third, ICU admissions. Many patients were admitted to ICU when they could have been treated with steroids, however again the medical misinformation was shocking. Unfortunately, unless you are the right age of 60 and normally quite healthy, getting intubated and spending time in ICU is a death sentence, even without COVID.

 

So now I've clarified that, here's a paper that's a few years old but was one of the first to reveal the true figures. It's not a bad paper although the authors claim it uses mixed methodology. 4. Discussion

In a mixed design synthesis of COVID-19 national seroprevalence studies and mortality data aimed at estimating the IFR of COVID-19 among non-elderly populations, we found that the IFR in the pre-vaccination era is substantially lower than previously calculated (Levin et al., 2020; O’Driscoll et al., 2021; Brazeau et al., 2020; Ioannidis, 2021b; Axfors and Ioannidis, 2022; COVID-19 Forecasting Team, 2022), especially in the younger age strata. Median IFRs show a clear age-gradient with approximately 3-4-fold increase for each decade but it starts from as low as 0.0003% among children and adolescents and it reaches 0.5% in the 60–69 years old age group. Sensitivity analyses considering all 38 countries with seroprevalence data that were identified in our systematic search showed that median IFR might be up to a third lower than the estimates produced by our main analysis, e.g. approximately 0.03% in the 0–59 years age group and 0.06–0.08% in the 0–69 years old group. Consistent with these estimates, meta-regressions suggest IFR estimates in that range for the global population where 87% of the 0–59 years old people are <50 years old and 80% of the 0–69 years old people are <50 years old.

Our IFR estimates tend to be modestly to markedly lower than several previous calculations (Levin et al., 2020; O’Driscoll et al., 2021; Brazeau et al., 2020; Ioannidis, 2021b; Axfors and Ioannidis, 2022; COVID-19 Forecasting Team, 2022). The most comprehensive prior evaluation of COVID-19 IFR in the pre-vaccination era (COVID-19 Forecasting Team, 2022) suggested a trough IFR at the age of 7 years (0.0023%, 95% uncertainty interval 0.0015–0.0039) and increasing exponentially through 30 years (0.0573%, 0.0418–0.0870), 60 years (1.0035%, 0.7002–1.5727) and older ages. Conversely, our median IFR estimates are roughly 10-fold lower than these previous calculations among children and young adults and 3-6-fold lower among adults 40–69 years old. If we exclude study data from age bins with 0 deaths in our calculations (a justifiable choice, since these estimates of 0% IFR are clearly underestimates), our age-stratified IFR are still approximately 2-5-fold lower than those of (COVID-19 Forecasting Team, 2022) across the entire age range. The previous IFR calculations (Levin et al., 2020; O’Driscoll et al., 2021; Brazeau et al., 2020; Ioannidis, 2021b; Axfors and Ioannidis, 2022; COVID-19 Forecasting Team, 2022) were based on more limited national representative studies' data and also included data from non-national samples with potentially larger bias. They also probably included mostly hard hit countries that may tend to have the highest IFR estimates. While much of the diversity in IFR across countries is explained by differences in age structure (COVID-19 Forecasting Team, 2022), additional substantial differences are possible. Another major reason for the discrepancy versus prior calculations is due to the fact that some previous calculations (e.g. ref. 59) have substantially increased their initial IFR estimates by multiplying them for a factor of under-ascertainment of COVID-19 deaths. Aligning evaluations in terms of this methodological difference would bring the estimates closer, but divergence would still be present with our estimates remaining lower. Some other estimates for pre-vaccination IFR agree more with our estimates overall, e.g. 0.107% across all ages combined (Ayoub et al., 2021).

I wonder why so many of the proponents (other than a few diehard jab-addicts) aren’t following “the sciences” recommendations regarding boosters?

 

Many will state that omicron or whatever the strain du jour isn’t worrying enough for them to get boosted…..but they follow the science and are ab-so-lutely sure that the goop saved gazillions of lives.

 

But now they choose not to listen to the cdc?
