(Admins - I hope this is the correct place for this topic)

My TGF just informed me that her credit card had been hacked last night.

Transaction amount - THB 50,000/= (GBP 1160/=

Transaction type - Booking dot com

Transaction country - Maybe UK

She had already informed the card issuer : KTC

What is the best course of action to take next?

Thank you very much in advance.

I rarely use my foreign credit card.

When possible Thai debit card or direct debit/transfer.

Thai debit cards e.g. from SCB can be configured to the finest detail.

Usage, countries, limits...

I have been hacked several times!

i try to stay away from  pos( point  of sale)terminals , the kind that swipe the magnet strip or the front slot insert.

Also I dont allow a cashier to expose my card numbers to the overhead security cameras. I try to only handle the card my self.

If I need to use booking.com or a online purchase I use a specific card for that and immediately lock my card  after purchase.

I use a card with the chip and tap vs insert at Pos terminals such as Home Pro & Watsadue & Lotus. So far so good. Big C & Makro  I use cash.

Its becoming more & more dangerous using ones cards.

Good luck

She's told the issuer so nothing more to do.

Personally I'm using virtual cards where possible and only putting a balance on that that matches the transaction

Which bank in TH issues victual cards? Or cards that can be "topped up".

I have never lost a Penny on credit cards (in fact the protection rules have saved me money).

I have lost money with cash..... list and stolen

i Cant say the same! Ive never lost out due to the fraudulent transaction but its cost me money to have a new card replaced in shipment from my address in the states to here and the 3 weeks of waiting for it and the time involved trying to decline the fraud!

Its a pain in the left cheek!

Wise has virtual cards, probably Revolut also, you'll need to check the Thai banks

Get a better card. I've had a couple shipped over the years to SE Asia and they shipped it overnight. Actually took a couple of days.

I use my virtual card for ify transactions, such as I just bought credit on Call360 App, I didn't want to leave my card open on the app so I added a balance which only covered the credit, no need to delete the card. My bank allows 5 new cards a day and 200 active cards

Yes don't give it away.

Scratch off the three digit code (after noting).

True for all cards.

Give a card to a pump station assistant and expect it to be photographed from both sides. If the card issuer has no two factor feature that is enough to use the date online.

No hack in the IT way needed.

booking.com has a specific security problem with hotel ITs hacked and people sent phishing messages that look 100% legit.

Not sure whether it's related.

Whenever you give a card to anyone for a transaction, always stand there and watch until it's returned, watching to see if they're scrutinizing it to remember the details.

Best advice is don’t use credit cards in Thailand, physically.

I never use my actual card in Thailand but i had my UK credit card hacked twice last year. Luckily the bank stopped any payments so i didn't lose out but heaven knows how they get to charge items to my card. I did have problems with Booking.com though sending me messages saying that my bookings had been cancelled (they weren't) and that i had to quickly contact them via their (fake) address.
