Vietnamese primary school students have once again distinguished themselves in the 2024 Southeast Asia Primary Learning Metrics (SEA-PLM) assessment, showcasing top-tier performance in math, reading comprehension, and writing. The Ministry of Education and Training shared these preliminary results, with detailed findings to follow later this year.

The assessment involved participation from Vietnam along with Cambodia, Timor-Leste, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, and the Philippines, spanning 152 primary schools in 53 provinces and cities across Vietnam. Coordinated by the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO), UNICEF, and international partners, SEA-PLM is a five-yearly evaluation aimed at monitoring student learning outcomes and enhancing educational systems across the region.

Vietnam's stellar performance in 2024 aligns with its historic top rankings in the 2019 cycle of SEA-PLM, where it outperformed regional peers with scores well beyond the regional average in all three subjects.

The Ministry noted consistency in these achievements with Vietnam's strong showing in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). In the most recent 2022 PISA results, Vietnamese 15-year-olds ranked second in ASEAN for math, science, and reading, just behind Singapore.

Aligned with the post-Covid-19 educational landscape, the 2024 SEA-PLM cycle is pivotal in assessing learning recovery, educational outcomes, and promoting regional policy dialogue. Vietnam's participation continues to offer critical insights and benchmarks, aiding in policy refinement and educational quality improvement nationwide.
