The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has adapted its design for the Ayutthaya high-speed rail station, following crucial advice from international heritage organisations emphasising the need to balance modern development with the preservation of the UNESCO World Heritage site.

SRT governor Veeris Ammarapala announced that input was received in a detailed report from ICCROM and ICOMOS, both advisory bodies to the World Heritage Committee. These organisations conducted a thorough assessment of Ayutthaya from January 19-22, evaluating the Heritage Impact Assessment linked with the rail project.

Their findings indicated that rerouting the high-speed rail line away from Ayutthaya would not be practical. Instead, they advocated for alterations to the station's design and the height of the elevated tracks to ensure they remain invisible from within the heritage zone. This recommendation aims to preserve the visual integrity of the historic site.

In addition to adjusting the station's visibility, the experts advised enhancing cooperation between various departments including the Department of Rail Transport and the Fine Arts Department. This cooperative approach is intended to address the potential indirect and long-term impacts of the rail project on the heritage site.

Specific design modifications were also recommended to harmonise the station with the surrounding landscape. Suggestions included reducing building height, scaling appropriately, and utilising architectural elements that blend with the existing environment. Landscaping efforts, such as planting trees in public park areas and replacing those removed during construction, were also proposed to maintain visual cohesion.

Mr Veeris affirmed that the SRT has promptly revised the station's design to incorporate these expert suggestions. This decision reflects a commitment to safeguarding Ayutthaya’s cultural heritage while advancing infrastructure development, underscoring a thoughtful approach to integrating modernity with historical preservation.
