The long-awaited rehabilitation of Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) is scheduled to commence mid-June, as announced by Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon. This announcement came during an inspection of the Balintawak Station elevators along the EDSA Busway in Quezon City.

While Dizon mentioned a tentative mid-June start date, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chief Don Artes specified June 13 as the target start date for the roadwork. This rehabilitation effort aims to address long-standing infrastructure issues on EDSA, with Dizon noting that it's been 45 years since the avenue's last significant renovation.

As the renovation is expected to cause considerable traffic congestion, Dizon revealed plans to alleviate some of the anticipated traffic woes. The Department of Transportation (DOTr) plans to recommend making certain segments of the Skyway toll-free, allowing motorists an alternative route to avoid EDSA during the construction period. Specific details regarding which Skyway segments might be made free and the duration of this measure are still under discussion.

The plan to temporarily open parts of the Skyway for free travel is still being finalized in collaboration with various stakeholders and agencies. Meanwhile, Manila commuters and motorists are advised to brace themselves for heavier traffic on EDSA and to consider alternative routes in the coming months as the rehabilitation project gets underway.
