Nguyen Thi Thanh, affectionately known as Vietnam’s “Lunch Lady,” passed away due to cardiac arrest at the age of 58 moments after arriving at Toronto Pearson International Airport on May 19. The culinary world remembers her as a street food icon, largely due to her famous eatery in Ho Chi Minh City's Binh Thanh District, which gained international acclaim when featured by American chef Anthony Bourdain on his show "No Reservations" in 2009.

Bourdain's admiration for Thanh's culinary skills led him to nickname her the "Lunch Lady," a moniker that brought her global recognition and propelled her into the spotlight.

Her untimely passing was announced on Instagram by the Lunch Lady restaurant owners in Vancouver, who expressed sorrow over the loss. "We were ready to welcome her. To honor her. To celebrate this moment together. And now, we are mourning an immeasurable loss," their statement read.

Thanh had traveled to Canada to work on preparations for inaugurating another restaurant location in Toronto, following the success of her Vancouver establishment opened in 2020. The Toronto launch, initially planned for June 3, has been postponed as her family and staff make arrangements to bring her back to Vietnam.

Her original restaurant earned a passionate customer base with its distinctive daily rotating broths, a reflection of cherished family recipes passed down through the generations. Thanh’s legacy lives on in these flavors, capturing the heart and soul of Vietnamese cuisine that she so lovingly shared with the world.
