Good for the elderly and those who like eating, all inclusive is a bad idea anywhere

I was on a cruise once with my mother and sisters as a kind of reunion, and though it was really fun hanging out with them, I just didn't like being around thousands of people and I'd never do it again, luxury or not. Even if it was free I don't think I'd do it again, just not my style of traveling. But to each his own. Some love cruises.

Having spoken to people who both do both ocean and river cruises, the consensus is the river cruises are far more enjoyable, with smaller boats and less people. What I was referring to is the big ocean liners, which would not be my cup of tea.

 

A river cruise would be fun. That's the only kind of cruises that my sister does and she loves them. 

The basic trips is cheap, but with all adds on like outside cabin,  double bed, full pension where higher cabin classes gives higher class food and restaurants, shows, activities, sightseeing, etc. And also the more scenic and popular cruises costs more.

 

But if you like to eat and drink more than a normal person, it could be worth it. Only been once, and never again. 
 

My wife got sea sick to  🤢

Entirely agree. Went on a cruise around the Mediterranean many years ago. Experienced  claustrophobia within minutes, and soon after realised I would be unable to avoid people I would rather not know. Loathed every minute. Never again !

I can all too easily imagine the same feelings... maybe if your mother and sister would come with me it would be better... I think my wife not like it much either. 

A river cruise using Viking is really nice. Ocean cruise using Carnival not so much

I was once in Phuket when one of the Cunard ships stopped by as part of an around the world cruise.  That was years ago.  Maybe the Queen Victoria?  Anyway, the ship was huge.  

 

It looked nice, and I'm sure the people traveling that way were treated well, but for some reason, I can't stand the idea of a cruise, no matter how luxurious.  I probably wouldn't do it,  even if it was free.

 

The only kind of cruise I might consider would be on a very small ship with a limited number of passengers.

Just kidding but I think I might end up feeling the same way. I did take a small vessel cruise for a couple of days out of Bangkok, About ten good friends along with us - but it was not very luxurious and I think we got the same food reheated for the couple of days

I'm not sure they'd have enough money to pay me to go on one of those cruises. They do cost a small fortune, though.  Back in the 70s, I knew a girl who worked for the company that booked around the world cruises on whatever Cunard ship was operating back then.  As I recall, she said the top of the line tickets for the around the world cruise were $50,000.  Something crazy. And when you think about all the inflation over the years, that was a lot of money at the time. 

 

I might look up what a similar ticket would cost today.

I wouldn't be surprised if it were less - - they now have some live aboard full time programs... when I was young, I was a round the world backpacker, traveling on the cheap. I remember thinking when I get older, it might be nice to do it in style,, but my desire to travel is near non-existent...

My Thai wife loved it, and my nephew as well

There are very few luxury cruise lines left. Carnival owns Cunard and Seabourn. They were once known for their quality and high standards. Now they operate with the Carnival Cruise line mindset. They still price out as luxury though. 

 

If the cruise lines visit Thailand, they treat Bangkok as a port of call.  Cunard's Queen Anne does the  Sydney-Singapore-Hong Kong-Los Angeles route and  excludes Thailand.  Everywhere, but Thailand.

Seabourn  bypasses  Thailand too. It prefers Vietnam.

Regent is an alternative, but is very expensive, A nice suite is USD 15,000 per person+ for a 2 week cruise.  It departs Bangkok, and usually only does one stop for a day either Ko Samui or Phuket.

 

 

Big tipping is normal and expected, no get out 

  Spouse and I are doing a Celebrity cruise in November--a reunion with my 4 sisters and a couple of cousins, with two of my sisters having November birthdays.  We have never been on a cruise so we'll see how we like it but it should be fun as its been several years since we all got together.  Cruise is from Barcelona and makes some stops in Spain, France, and Italy.
