Social Media Posted Monday at 09:04 PM Posted Monday at 09:04 PM Trump Delays Tariff Hike After ‘Positive’ Call With EU Commission Chief President Donald Trump has agreed to postpone a looming tariff increase on European Union exports following what he described as a productive phone conversation with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The move gives both sides until July 9 to strike a new trade agreement that could avert the imposition of steep 50 percent tariffs on EU goods entering the United States. Trump had originally set a deadline of June 1 for the tariffs to take effect, but the extension followed a direct request from von der Leyen. “I received a call today from Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, requesting an extension on the June 1st deadline on the 50% Tariff with respect to Trade and the European Union,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “I agreed to the extension — July 9, 2025 — It was my privilege to do so.” Trump also indicated that the initiative to resume negotiations came from the EU side and expressed optimism about the talks. “The Commission President said that talks will begin rapidly. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” Von der Leyen also expressed a hopeful tone in her statement about the conversation. Posting on X, formerly known as Twitter, she said the dialogue had gone well. “Good call with @POTUS,” she wrote. “The EU and US share the world’s most consequential and close trade relationship. Europe is ready to advance talks swiftly and decisively. To reach a good deal, we would need the time until July 9.” The exchange reflects an effort on both sides to maintain stability in one of the world’s most significant economic partnerships. With high tariffs hanging in the balance, the coming weeks are likely to be filled with intense negotiations aimed at avoiding a potentially disruptive trade clash. The outcome could have major implications for transatlantic commerce, supply chains, and diplomatic relations, especially as both economies navigate a complex global environment. For now, however, both leaders appear aligned in their desire to reach a resolution through renewed dialogue. Adapted by ASEAN Now from The Hill 2025-05-27 1 3

It's ok if you don't understand negotiating tactics. Let's wait and see how his tariffs gambit pays off in the end. Im sure it cant be worse than your man Biden lubing up the nation and bending it over the couch for foreign nations to come and take advantage - if you know what I mean😅 1 1 2

Most likely because his only intention is making the news by bullying every nation in the world, and destroying the US. The EU played the game well this time, or they also could have added $108B in retaliatory tariffs if talks fail. 2 3 1 2

Trump is the joke. The 2-Apr tariffs on EU were set at 20%, reduced to 10% for 90 days which is early Jul. Last Friday he throws a tariff tantrum and says 50% on 1-June. Now after speaking to an adult, he has reverted back to 10% until early July again waiting on a deal. Today, tomorrow who knows what he does. #laughing stock of the world. 1 1 1 1 1
Digitalbanana Posted Tuesday at 11:49 AM Posted Tuesday at 11:49 AM Tariff roulette. Somebody needs to explain to this Trump administration that daily uncertainty is not a sound economic policy. So, how does a simple-minded president get away with implementing the most ill-conceived trade policy and then have the audacity to tell the American public and American businesses to ‘eat the cost’? I guess it’s easy if you just scream <removed> every time someone questions your logic. Then, all you need to do is surround yourself with spineless yes men and legislate tax breaks for your rich friends. It’s so un-American and it should concern everyone. But there are real business reasons why this is such a horrible trade policy. The US is the world leader in virtually every industry sector, because America has developed an unstoppable growth engine that builds on what everyone else in the world does well. Whether it’s a brain, manufacturing, or a tech drain, the US is the best at monetizing the world’s greatest efficiencies. It's called free market capitalism, and it works. The Soz 1 1 2

In light of what he has done would you conduct business with him? Wherever possible, countries are now seeking alternative countries to trade with. Even if Trumps BS plan saves the country money in trade tariffs the damage he has done/will be done, will probably eclipse that 10 fold. I think it will be more important to see US export quotas in about a year as it will take time for countries to find alternative suppliers, but i am sure they will, at a massive cost to the US economy. 2 1 4

The EU played the game well this time, or they also could have added $108B in retaliatory tariffs if talks fail. The article you linked also gives a few hints about the EU's proposal and position. The elements are familiar as they were already discussed during the TTIP trade deal negotiations that Trump 1.0 trashed. For example, opening public procurement which is currently largely closed to foreign suppliers in the U.S. https://www.europarl.europa.eu/legislative-train/package-market-access/file-ttip-public-procurement "The European Commission’s latest proposals come in response to a paper the Trump administration shared with the bloc’s executive arm following an earlier EU proposal. One EU official described the US paper as a wish list of unrealistic demands. Brussels has declared as non-negotiable any unilateral demands that jeopardize the EU’s autonomy in regulatory and tax matters, the official said. The US has long complained about many EU digital rules and sees its value-added tax as a barrier to trade. Brussels argues that VAT isn’t a trade measure and equally applies to all goods, European and non-European. Although recent deals the US reached with the UK and China suggest Trump’s appetite to escalate has its limits, EU officials don’t see in either agreement a clear landing zone for future deals, Bloomberg previously reported. The two deals also suggest that a baseline tariff across many goods and a mix of sectoral measures are likely to stay. Other areas covered in the EU’s latest proposal include food and agri-standards, mutual recognition agreements, public procurement, digital trade and discussions on the rules of origin of goods in order to safeguard mutual interests." https://finance.yahoo.com/news/eu-sends-trade-proposal-us-064245681.html And it also confirms that Trump lied about the trade deficit, but we already all know he's a liar! 😆 1
