The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has submitted a proposal requesting a budget of 2 billion baht to upgrade the country’s rail infrastructure as part of the government’s 157 billion baht economic stimulus package.

Mr. Weerisit Amrapal, Governor of the SRT, revealed that the plan aims to address weaknesses in rail structures across various regions nationwide, where certain sections are vulnerable to subsidence, landslides, and flooding. These issues pose safety risks to rail operations. The project also includes improvements to railway crossing barriers and signalling systems.

“The proposed projects cover several areas, including reinforcing bridge foundations to increase load-bearing capacity, constructing retaining walls to prevent soil erosion, installing drainage systems to mitigate flooding, and strengthening areas at risk of natural disasters such as landslides. These measures will ensure the rail infrastructure is safe and reliable for continuous train services,” said Mr. Weerisit.

He added that the initial budget request totals 2 billion baht to commence these upgrades. The proposal was formally submitted to the Ministry of Transport.

However, the allocation of funds is subject to government approval and prioritisation and project scopes may be adjusted depending on budget constraints. The SRT is prepared to revise details in line with government policies to ensure the stimulus plan can effectively support economic recovery.
