Alexis Solia, a British transwoman

There are so many stages in transing or transgendering or transiting or whatever else it may also be called that every time I read the word "transwoman", I am left wondering whether I am reading about a person with a penis or a person with a vagina.

P.S.  Having now read to the end of the news article, I can stop being puzzled in this case. The trans individual in question is still pondering about having gender-assignment surgery.

Alexis Solia, a British transwoman and activist, has announced her plans to leave the UK following a controversial Supreme Court ruling that has intensified her fears for safety. The April decision clarified that "sex" under the Equality Act refers strictly to biological sex, not gender identity, a ruling that has sparked widespread concern within the transgender community.

Solia, who has endured years of harassment and abuse, sees the ruling as a tipping point. "It feels like we’ve been told we’re not welcome anymore," she remarked, expressing her heightened anxiety about venturing outdoors.

The 30-year-old content creator is now preparing to move to Chiang Mai, Thailand, in search of a more inclusive environment. Although Thailand doesn’t provide full legal recognition for trans identities, Solia hopes it offers a respite from the discriminatory climate in the UK and access to gender-affirming care.

In the UK, Solia has faced relentless harassment, recounting experiences of being groped in pubs, misgendered in public, and physically attacked. "It’s almost like a letter saying: ‘You’re not allowed in society anymore,’" she explained, echoing the sentiment that the ruling has exacerbated anti-trans hostility.

Solia criticised prevailing myths about the threat transwomen supposedly pose in female spaces, calling them "ridiculous." She argued that being forced to use men’s facilities presents significant dangers, given the hormonal treatments many trans individuals undergo.

The rise in transphobia, according to Solia, is intertwined with broader misogyny, highlighting a culture increasingly intent on controlling women. Data supports these fears, with a National Audit Office report showing a rise in sexual assault rates against women in England and Wales, coupled with increased reports of such crimes.

Prominent figures in the trans community, such as Jane Fae from TransActual, have noted a spike in trans individuals seeking to flee the UK since the court ruling, citing increased violence, stress, and mental health struggles.

Solia is set to attend London Pride before relocating, actively funding her move through a fundraiser that has already amassed nearly half of the £5,000 needed. The generosity of supporters has provided a silver lining amidst the challenges. "Seeing that support brought me to tears," she shared, illustrating the community’s resilience and solidarity.

In Thailand, Alexis aims to reclaim her life free from the "bureaucracy and barriers" she faces in the UK, pursuing hormone therapy and possible surgical interventions in a culture she perceives as more accepting. While acknowledging that no place is perfect, Solia’s primary desire is simply to live safely and freely.
