Philippines Braces for Rainy Season as Southwest Monsoon Returns

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has confirmed the return of the southwest monsoon, commonly known as "habagat," as of Friday, May 30. This development signals the potential onset of the rainy season within the next two weeks.

PAGASA's recent weather analysis identified consistent southwesterly winds over Luzon's western section and a frontal system over extreme Northern Luzon. This shift, coupled with the weakening of the easterlies, marks the beginning of the southwest monsoon—a key indicator for the rainy season.

To officially declare the start of the rainy season, the southwest monsoon must dominate and produce at least 25 mm of rain for five consecutive days across seven monitoring stations in western Luzon.

As the habagat strengthens, frequent rains and thunderstorms are expected, particularly in the country's western areas. However, PAGASA warns that the rainy season may still feature "monsoon breaks," or temporary lulls in rainfall.

Residents are advised to remain alert as the weather changes, preparing for increased rainfall and potential thunderstorms in the weeks ahead. PAGASA's updates and warnings will be crucial for navigating the dynamic conditions brought by the returning monsoon.

Same obsession as in Thailand for the official beginning of the monsoon season, regardless of what's been happening on the ground for days or weeks beforehand.

Here Thai officialdom declares the opening of the season some time in June and says we must prepare for possible flooding, often weeks after the annual deluge has begun.

The annual symbol of official incompetence.

After weeks of really hot and really dry, well so low the water is like showering in battery acid, the switch in seasons is welcome.
