A magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck the Mae Pang subdistrict of Chiang Mai Province on the afternoon of 2 June, causing some panic among local residents who reported tremors and homes shaking..

According to Thailand’s Meteorological Department’s Earthquake Surveillance Division, the quake occurred at 14:07 , at a depth of just 1 kilometre. The epicentre was located in the Mae Pang area of Phrao District, approximately 80 kilometres north of Chiang Mai city.

Many residents in Mae Pang and surrounding communities felt the tremor, with some describing how their entire houses shook. Local reports indicated some people ran out into the streets in fear, concerned about aftershocks or further seismic activity.

Earlier the same day, at 11:36, a smaller quake of magnitude 1.7 struck Sop Poeng, another subdistrict in the region, at a depth of 3 kilometres. No damage was reported from that event.

This latest tremor follows a cluster of minor earthquakes reported just days earlier. On 31 May, three separate quakes were recorded in rapid succession in Chiang Mai Province:

At 20:51, a magnitude 2.6 quake at a depth of 2 km

At 22:12, a magnitude 1.4 quake at 2 km deep

Just three minutes later, another magnitude 1.4 quake at a depth of 3 km

While there have been no reports of injuries or structural damage, local authorities are closely monitoring the situation. Emergency services have been placed on alert and residents are advised to remain cautious.

Chiang Mai, located near the Mae Chan Fault Line, is known to be a seismically active area, though significant quakes remain rare. Experts from the Meteorological Department are continuing to assess the situation and will provide updates as necessary.
