Amid escalating tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border, Thailand's First Army Region has been placed on combat-readiness. The move comes as both Thai and Cambodian forces bolster their presence in the largely un-demarcated border areas.

Yesterday, Lt-Gen Amarit Boonsuya, commander of the First Army Region, conducted an inspection of troops at a major barracks in Chon Buri. In a display of military strength, soldiers from various divisions, including the 11th Infantry Division, Kanchanaburi-based 9th Infantry Division, Lop Buri-based Artillery Division, Anti-Aircraft Division, and Rapid Deployment Forces, gathered in full combat gear. Accompanied by armoured vehicles, anti-aircraft guns, and troop carriers, the troops showcased their readiness.

During the inspection, Lt-Gen Amarit urged the assembled forces to place confidence in their abilities and remain prepared to make sacrifices in defence of their nation. The eastern border tensions fall under the jurisdiction of Thailand’s Second Army Region, but the involvement of the First Army Region underscores the seriousness of the situation.

The heightened military readiness reflects ongoing concerns regarding the longstanding border disputes between Thailand and Cambodia. While efforts for peaceful resolution remain a priority through diplomatic channels, both sides continue to reinforce their troops, indicating the fragile nature of the current peace.

As the situation develops, both nations have been reminded of the importance of maintaining dialogue to prevent further escalation and ensure stability in the region.

Ridiculous overkill regarding a border dispute that the ICJ has ruled against them, and now they are just nitpicking on land areas around it.

It's not protecting borders, it's bullying a much smaller neighbour.

No need for military intervention. Just close the border for a week and Cambodia will feel the (economic) pain. Keep it closed for a month, border markets will shutter, the supply of fresh produce, electronics and household goods will stop from Thailand and they'll be on their knees pleading for reconciliation..

Last time they tried that (with Laos) it didn't end well for Thailand. Many years ago of course..

...Gotta Question The Timing... (?)

...Someone In Need Of A Distraction Calling In A Favor... (?)

...(Let's Hope Not Even Worse Intentions Than That)...(?)

I think all 3 questions are spot on. But another unanswered question is: "Who gave the go-ahead for the Thai army to cause an international incident?" Did the Defense Minister have advanced knowledge and gave the green light? Or just some very senior general that made the decision? If the latter, and the Defense Minister was not involved at the get-go, then this is very disturbing. A red flag.

I thought it is 21st century and kindergarten is out at 3.30pm.

This rattling the cage - we had all this back in 2008 when the doctrine was to unite Thailand from all this domestic throwing manure at random. Nothing better than to cook up a foreign enemy.

For sure it was not the small soldiers along the border (which I visited extensively); they are brothers-in-arms, eat together, help each other and even speak the same language. An order to shoot comes from higher up and that order; cross border, comes from even higher up.

But the bucket stops with the defense minister who said that a military coup is not impossible. Well, if he does not have his ministry under control, who has then?

Apart from domestic politics with Dr T fiddling around everywhere, Anutin dethroned from his interior ministry sedan chair and Dr T's daughter running around without concept due to lack of experience, it could give the gentlemen in green good reasons to instigate the 20th coup d'état since 1932. The only thing which changed since 1932 is the amount politicians pay for buying votes and at the end everybody is surprised, that it did not work again.

But that applies only to Lala Land; Thailand is a modern democracy with polarized coalition government run by professionals in the trade 😉

Of course. But if it ever gets really serious, then China could get involved (in a way like US does for Israel).

Russia against Ukraine, Israel against Gaza and Iran, Thailand against Cambodia, WW3 is coming soon . . .

A pretty stupid move I think.

If Cambodia is quietly building up its military presence in the region ( which I am not aware is a proven fact), then a responsible Thailand would do the same, quietly.

This rah rah move gives the appearance of the intention to stir up nationalistic pride and the Cambodians are a useful and readily available target.

Presumably there will be a next step in the works which will be revealed in the fullness of time.

Yes. Exactly. And why hasn't anyone (Thai news media) asked the Defense Minister if he gave the order, or at least was aware the military was planning this. I wouldn't be surprised if he only found out about the Thai military aggression (on his watch) the same time everyone else did. If that's the case, then the military pays no attention to the guy who is supposed to make such a decision. And it really, really smells of a hidden agenda.

I would say this post is close to the truth IMHO.

There is apparently no truth in the rumor that this is part of a campaign for new/improved/increased armaments due to a very urgent need for brown envelopes.
