Science Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. underscored the crucial role of accessible and understandable information in shifting the Philippines' disaster response from reactive to proactive strategies. Speaking at the 2025 Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in Geneva, Switzerland, Solidum highlighted science-driven initiatives showcasing how the disaster-prone nation is gearing up for future natural calamities.

Central to the Philippines' disaster preparation efforts is the dissemination of relevant information to both local governments and citizens. Solidum emphasized the need for every Filipino to have easy access to clear hazard and risk data, making it actionable and useful in reducing disaster impacts. "Our goal is a Philippines where every community, city, town, and province can access clear and understandable hazard information. It's essential this data is available, accessible, and actionable for all Filipinos," he stated during a plenary session.

Solidum proudly noted the nation's commitment to championing information as a fundamental right. "Accessible and practical scientific information is the cornerstone of the resilient first line of defense," he remarked passionately.

To realise these goals, Solidum introduced two key innovations: GeoRiskPH and PlanSmart. GeoRiskPH, developed in 2018 by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, employs a geospatial system for assessing risks and enhancing resilience planning. Not only does the project aid in disaster preparedness, but it also facilitates the planning of relocation efforts for impacted populations, ensuring sustained livelihoods alongside housing solutions.

The second innovation, PlanSmart Ready to Rebuild, is a mobile application launched in 2022 and already utilised by over 350 local government units. This app automates the generation of rehabilitation and recovery plans using a pro-forma document template, streamlining the response process.

With the Geneva summit serving as a platform for exchange and inspiration, Solidum's presentation highlighted the Philippines' proactive approach and reaffirmed the country's commitment to bolstering resilience through informed, science-based strategies. As such, the nation aims to set an example for other countries facing similar challenges. The summit is scheduled to conclude on Friday, marking an end to the vital discussions on global disaster risk reduction.
