In a commendable effort to support its elderly population, the provincial government of Albay has initiated the distribution of pensions to more than 4,000 indigent senior citizens from three towns and one city. Covering the period from January to June 2023, this financial assistance aims to provide much-needed relief to senior citizens in the region.

According to a report from the Albay Provincial Information Office on Wednesday, each qualified senior received a pension of PHP 3,000. The distribution started on Monday and will continue over a four-day period, pausing on Thursday due to the observance of Independence Day, and concluding on Friday.

The recipients of this financial aid come from the municipalities of Rapu-Rapu, where 515 seniors are benefiting, Camalig with 1,818 beneficiaries, Oas with 1,318, and Ligao City, where 811 senior citizens received their pensions. These beneficiaries have undergone a thorough validation process conducted by the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWD) in collaboration with the Office for Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA) and the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO) in their respective areas.

The distribution forms part of a broader initiative to support the marginalized elderly across Albay. The programme not only addresses financial necessities but also underscores the government's dedication to the welfare of its senior citizens.

Looking ahead, the provincial government has scheduled another round of pension distributions for senior citizens in other towns and cities in Albay. This ongoing programme reflects the provincial administration's commitment to inclusive support measures for its aging residents, reinforcing the importance of social assistance in enhancing their quality of life.

The initiative has been well-received by the communities involved, highlighting the essential role of local governance in responding to the needs of vulnerable populations, particularly in times of economic stability challenges. Through targeted support efforts like this, the Albay provincial government sets a precedent for effectively addressing the welfare needs of senior citizens across the region.
