Foreign Man Damages ATM Outside Indian Restaurant in Pattaya After Card Is Swallowed

Losing ATM card while abroad, is the daunting experience.

I hear this kind of incident  from time to time.

Advisable to:

Photograph own atm/debit card just in case(in order to claim ownership in emergency).

Carry passport to prove identity.

And use it at the machine located at the bank branch where possible(instead of the one on the street).

So able to ask bank staff for help immediately  if something wrong ever happens.

This same accident  once happened to me more than a decade ago.

Fortunately, it  was at the branch of my main bank.

I could recover my card(from the bank outside Thailand) within the next 5-10 minutes.

Because of intoxicated it was a mix of numbers in his brain,

then it is difficult to find the right pin.

Quite possibly.

Entering wrong number 3 times in succession, might result in the seizure of that card, by arm's built-in security system.

Poor guy, he finds himself deprived of cash to treat himself to a short-time with one of these beautiful Pattaya girls with a hidden cock . . . 😟

The easiest way to identify him. They got his card, then his name, then check the data and arrest him at his place. Ban him. We don't want to have these riffraff here

Only if it was HIS CARD. 🙃Otherweise ..... 😎

Sad part is. He must return to the bank immediately upon their opening to collect his card otherwise the bank will cut it in half. I always hated when their ATM machines ate my card. It happens if making a mistake with your PIN number 3 times.. Once, it happened to me while travelling. I did not return to that bank to collect my card for 2 days. When i got there they had already cut it in half and disposed of it.

This guy must have been pissed off to do the damage it claims. He will surely have to pay damages so I hope his card has a lot of money on it.

Has happened twice to me. Once my fault as input wrong code, other time faulty ATM. I felt like tearing the ATM apart, especially as was at Bali airport with no staff around at all. Fortunately I had backup funding but what if someone didn't? They arrive into country and unable to get their funds.

ATMs should not take cards, period. If someone has stolen a card and is trying with different pins, they haven't got a chance anyway. Let them try, after three times card comes out and unable to use for 24 hours or something like that.

And the process of the banks destroying the card, before the person is able to collect once able to track down the relevant office is pathetic.

You shouldn't use foreign cards in Thailand ATMs.

Best option. No physical use.

And if: only during bank opening hours and secure locations.

And stupidity never dies: some travel to Thailand with nothing than a single plastic card.

The drunk skunk probably saw two PIN pads.

Idiot, simply.

Eeeeh! Hmmm.....Nothing is easy for RTP

Not so sure about that. The RTP can move quickly if it is worth their while.

I feel his pain too. One time in Australia, I input the correct PIN, which was accepted by the ATM, which then asked me how much I wanted to withdraw. I selected a modest amount well under the daily withdrawal limit that was a fraction of the amount in the account, ATM then swallowed my card. I marched into the adjoining branch, and with zero language difficulties, since this was in Australia, explained what had happened. Sorry, can’t get card back, machine immediately destroys it, get new card mailed in a couple of weeks.

I confess getting your card swallowed is infuriating.  ATMs should be swipe-only or cardless: problem solved.

As to fraululent use, it should suffice for ATMs to be equipped with cameras that take a mug pic as soon as a transaction feels dodgy.

Been here 14 years. It has never happened but ... I confess I only ATMs for a foreign issued card outside a bank so that, if a card gets retained ... well, help is right inside the bank door. Otherwise, I do use my two Thai bank issued cards.

Good bet he is a tourist and the bank card is outside of thailand….

He should immediately go to the bank the next morning to 1 collect his card and 2 pay the damage

ps - the card might not be legit/unauthorized or not his card
