Uncle and Nephew Drown in Deadly Overflow Weir in Nakhon Phanom

An incident has claimed the lives of an uncle and his nephew after they were swept away by powerful currents while attempting to cross the overflowing I-Pu weir in Nakhon Phanom province.

The accident occurred on the afternoon of 14 June at the I-Pu overflow weir near Ban Nong Hua Ngua in Nakhu Yai subdistrict, Na Wa district. Seven villagers were trying to cross the weir, which had become dangerously swollen and fast-flowing following heavy rainfall in the area.

Witnesses watched in horror as Mr Apichet, 27 and his uncle Mr Pakphum, 30, were caught by the raging waters and quickly dragged under, disappearing from sight. The incident sparked panic and grief among their relatives and local residents who had gathered nearby.

Rescue teams, including local emergency services and officials from the Na Wa district, launched an immediate search operation. Family members of the victims conducted a traditional ritual, placing 16 incense sticks by the weir in hopes that local spirits would aid the recovery effort.

Search efforts continued into the night with support from Rear Admiral Narong Aemdee, commander of the Mekong Riverine Unit, who deployed a special operations team to assist in the recovery operation.

At 20:40 on 14 June, rescuers recovered the body of Mr Apichet. The body of Mr Pakphum was found at 05:45 the following morning, bringing the search to a sad conclusion.

Authorities and rescue personnel have extended their deepest condolences to the bereaved family, who praised the tireless efforts of all those involved in the search and recovery mission.

Officials have described the I-Pu weir as a “deadly barrier,” warning residents to avoid crossing or engaging in activities near overflowing water structures, particularly during periods of heavy. They urged the public to prioritise safety at all times and to be aware of the hidden dangers posed by fast-moving water, which can quickly turn a routine crossing into a fatal misstep.
