5 Most common mistakes we see in DTV applications

Featured Replies

Mistake #1 Relying only on the embassy website

Thai embassies often ask for more documents than listed online!

For example: remote workers may be asked to provide a company mission statement, their CV or even a motivation letter.

Mistake #2 Thinking you must apply from your home country

You can apply from certain other countries while on a tourist visa (for example, Cambodia, Indonesia)! Some embassies might even be more flexible & closer to Thailand than your home country embassy.

Mistake #3 Assuming all embassies have the same requirements

Each embassy may have its own specific requirements.

For example:

🇷🇺 Russia requires every document to be notarized and attested.

🇻🇳 Vietnam & 🇮🇩 Indonesia don’t.

Mistake #4 Assuming all applicants are treated the same

What worked for your friend may not work for you - so plan accordingly! Some embassies (like Vietnam) have restricted nationality lists, or may require extra documents for applicants from certain nationalities.

Mistake #5 Assuming home country applications are easy

Some embassies (e.g., 🇩🇪 Germany & 🇦🇹 Austria) require recent, formal proof of residence. Digital nomads may struggle with providing documents like this.

As mentioned earlier, some embassies might even be more flexible & closer to Thailand than your home country embassy!

All information shared above is based on visa rules as of June 2025 and are subject to change - always double-check with official sources or a visa consultant!

Could the following be another mistake?

Believing that immigration will continue to grant entry with the visa even when the reason for which it was issued no longer exists.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place

Just to make sure I understand correctly - are you referring to a scenario where someone no longer meets the reason their DTV was granted (for example, they stop working remotely or pause their Muay Thai training), and whether they’d still be allowed entry? Or are you referring to concerns around policy changes that could affect the DTV program itself in the future?

Happy to clarify either way!

I'm referring to a scenario where someone no longer meets the reason for which their DTV was granted (for example, they stop working remotely or pause their Muay Thai training), and whether they’d still be allowed entry.

Got it thanks for the clarification!

In this case, yes - once the DTV has been granted, it can’t be revoked solely due to changes in your original reason for applying (such as no longer working remotely for a company or pausing your training). You’ll still be allowed entry as long as your visa remains valid, you’re aware of the DTV conditions (e.g. 6-month stay limit, no work for a Thai company, etc.), and you meet standard entry requirements at the time of travel.

I would like to apply for the Destination Thailand Visa, I am a frequent Thailand visitor and often stay  a couple months at a time, usually arrive in Bangkok on the Visa Exempt program for US Citizens, and get an extension if needed.  I am currently in US and nearest Thai Embassy is in Los Angelas, what do you know about the application process there??  I have been undergoing medical treatment for many years at Bumrungrad Hospital in Bangkok, have all my records and would like to apply for the DTV for medical Reasons.  My ailments are lifelong and I get regular treatments.  I plan to come to Thailand in November for about 3-4 months and would like the Visa approved before then.  Can you help??

Past treatments don't matter.  You would need the hospital to write you a treatment plan outlining multiple months of future appointments/visits to justify a 5 year visa.

IMO if you have the NON 0 retirement visa, it makes much more sense than this LTR application mess.

This thread is about DTV, not LTR.  The LTR is far superior to both non-O and DTV.
