Politics Thai Deputy PM Phumtham Reassures Nation: No Coup Plans Amid Political Tensions
Picture courtesy of Thai Newsroom Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai addressed the nation today, firmly stating that military leaders have no intention of staging a coup d’état. This statement comes in response to recent speculation fueled by remarks made during a national unity rally at Bangkok's Victory Monument. Phumtham emphasised that the heads of the four armed forces are united in their focus on tackling the country's current challenges, not engaging in political upheaval. "The armed forces are committed to supporting the nation through this crisis, not exacerbating it with a coup," he affirmed. He also criticised the rally organisers for their irresponsible rhetoric, especially given that many leaders involved are currently facing legal proceedings. Phumtham warned against employing outdated tactics that have previously led to significant instability and prolonged suffering for the country. "Attempting to replicate past mistakes will only lead to more legal trouble," he noted. The conversation turned to Mr. Sonthi Limthongkul, a former leader of the People’s Alliance for Democracy, who recently spoke at the rally. Sonthi had boasted about his role in the past political change that saw the removal of then-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, the father of current Pheu Thai leader Paetongtarn Shinawatra. Phumtham was quick to downplay any comparisons, asserting, "These are different times and different circumstances. The methods used then are not applicable now." Phumtham concluded by stressing the country's commitment to solving its issues through the current political process. "We are already working through established channels to address various problems," he reassured, urging the public to place their trust in the ongoing processes rather than entertain disruptive ideas. This statement seeks to calm tensions and reaffirm the government's stance in the face of heightened political activity, ensuring that efforts remain focused on progress and stability.
