In a significant move to support education, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced that student discounts for the metro's key railways have been increased from 20% to 50%. This fare reduction applies to the MRT-3, LRT-1, and LRT-2 and will be effective until the end of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s term in 2028.

DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon highlighted the initiative's impact: "This is a big help for families, especially parents who struggle to send their kids to school. The savings can go towards school projects, increase their allowance, or cover other school expenses."

Notably, the discount is extended to postgraduate students and is available every day, including weekends and holidays.

To avail themselves of the discount, students need to purchase single-journey tickets and present their school IDs at the ticket booth. However, the discount is not applicable for Beep cards.

The DOTr clarified that the government will subsidise the LRT-1 discount, while LRT-2 and MRT-3 will bear the revenue losses directly.

This initiative aligns with the reopening of classes, aiming to alleviate the financial burden on families and support students as they return to their studies.
