A group of 31 repatriated overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) found themselves delayed in Qatar after an unexpected airspace closure, according to the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW). They were part of a repatriation flight accompanied by DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac.

The incident stemmed from heightened tensions in the region, following Iran's strike on a US military base in Qatar, which significantly disrupted air travel. This response was part of ongoing hostilities between Iran and Israel.

Secretary Cacdac confirmed, through a social media update, that the group, including OFWs from Israel, Jordan, Palestine, and Qatar itself, was safe and currently housed within Doha's Hamad International Airport. "Our flight was delayed due to the closure of Qatari airspace. We were asked to deplane and stay safely inside the terminal," Cacdac shared.

Fortunately, the airspace has reopened, and efforts are underway to secure a new flight for the stranded passengers. Meanwhile, two additional OFWs who missed their connection have been identified and will have their flights rebooked at DMW's expense.

The DMW reassured families of the affected individuals that concerted efforts are being made to reintroduce travel arrangements. Updates will consistently be communicated through DMW and OWWA channels to keep families informed.

This situation highlights the extensive Filipino presence in the Middle East, with approximately 2.1 million Filipinos residing there, including significant populations in the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. The incident underscores the geopolitical tensions impacting ordinary citizens worldwide, a reminder of the unexpected hurdles faced by migrants and government officials alike.
