unless of course one is a drug smuggler,  Seriously though anybody who needs to be told this should not be allowed to travel internationally. However, if cannabis is to become a "prescription" drug I see no reason for it to be treated any different than any other prescription drug  IE  if one has a script from their home country for medical cannabis there really should not be a problem.  I wouldn't put it to the test though, not yet anyway

I agree - these people are beyond stupid.

I have to take some prescription meds regularly, and bring 2 months supply with me on my trips to Thailand.

I always carry them openly in my carry-on and have an up to date prescription with me  - and these are drugs that one can buy in pharmacies in Thailand!  Can't be too careful.🤔

The chances are any thing that required a script back home would require one here, I'm guessing there are drugs which are available over the counter back home which would also require a script here. Always best to do a bit of research first before travelling here or anywhere else

This was always one of the possible scenarios—especially considering the fact that it was made clear from the beginning that it was intended for medicinal purposes. The fact that the rules were blatantly ignored and a shop was opened for recreational purposes is therefore a risk that was consciously taken. I can't feel sorry for the shop owners, even though I wish everyone success.

As for the employees, they'll find another job. For tourism, it's actually a positive development. Too many people were bothered by the strong smell and the, partly inappropriate, crowd it attracted, which didn't do tourism any favors. Road safety in Thailand was already a disaster, but it certainly hasn't improved with the rise in cannabis use.

But first, let’s see if the situation actually turns out to be as serious as it's being portrayed.

Any evidence of a negative effect of cannabis on road safety ?  I don't think the number of accidents has increased significantly

Regarding the scrip - In principle yes, BUT... I take several heart meds prescribed by my NHS doctor, I have a friend who takes the same ones. Earlier this year we both independently took a list of our meds into different pharmacies in Thailand and were told that we could buy a months supply of any of them, no questions.

 

But as for research, I couldn't agree more 👍

Almost anything which isn't an opioid can be purchased over the counter in Thailand.

If you can pronounce the name of the drug, they will sell it to you.

For Cannabis Under Category 5:
From 2-15 years imprisonment and a fine of 200,000 – 1,500,000 Baht for production, importation or exportation. From 2-10 years imprisonment or a fine of 40,000 – 200,000 Baht or both for disposal or possession for the purpose of disposal.

If they were to recriminalize ganja it would represent an enormous betrayal on the part of the Thai government. Billions upon billions have been invested in cannabis shops and operations mostly by relatively youthful Thais, giving them some sort of promise toward the future. This would not only be a betrayal of the dtrust that they put in the government, but a massive step backwards for Thailand.

 

Alcohol and tobacco are infinitely more harmful than ganja and the fake Puritans are making a big deal about nothing.

It’s sad that so many of us like to suppress reality with alcohol and drugs. I don’t exclude myself from this as I’m a recovering alcoholic 26 years . The best times of my life have been since I stopped. I had never been to Thailand when drinking. I wouldn’t have the money. I have been visiting sometimes 3 or four times a year this past 12 years…honestly enjoying all the trips and growing old disgracefully. 
the best thing I of all for me is that my grandchildren have never seen me drinking or taking drugs.

Honestly, this will just push the market underground again. It’s almost guaranteed that black market activity will spike — and I wouldn’t be surprised at all if some police officers start charging “protection fees” to turn a blind eye.

That kind of thing already happens with plenty of other establishments here.
 

I’ve heard from the wife that two Thai shop owners near our house are already preparing to move on through other channels if it comes to that.
 

To be frank, it really doesn’t seem like they know what they’re doing. Implementing something this drastic just three years after legalizing cannabis feels incredibly short-sighted and rushed. On top of that, we don’t even know if this government will still be in charge by the time November rolls around. They’re facing major issues right now, and a lot could change between now and then.
 

But let’s be real — I don’t see how they plan to enforce this. Zero chance. The infrastructure isn’t there, the demand isn’t going away, and the black market knows how to adapt way faster than the government can regulate.

it was a badly thought through policy, and needed correcting. sure, i enjoyed a smoke in my youth, while traveling in pakistan the product was awesome, however, i would never smoke in a place where i adversely effected  others. it's unpleasant to have the cannabis aroma in the streets. as the customers don't behave in a respectful way i'm very happy with the new ruling. hope it's enforced.
