Anutin Charnvirakul, leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, has firmly rejected accusations that his party mishandled the cannabis policy, particularly regarding its medical application. In addition, he's distanced himself from any endorsement of legalising casinos.

Β

Anutin was quick to respond to the government's recent plan to reclassify cannabis as a narcotic, a move allowing its use strictly for medical purposes. He emphasised that Bhumjaithai had already proposed comprehensive legislation to address medical cannabis during their time in government. Unfortunately, these efforts were stalled by coalition partners.

Β

He stated, β€œTo claim we left the cannabis issue unresolved is simply not true. We pushed for a proper legal framework, but it lacked support.”

Β

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and the ruling Pheu Thai Party have introduced a new cannabis bill, which Anutin supports. He sees no conflict between Bhumjaithai’s original focus on medical cannabis and this new proposal, emphasising that their aim was always centred on medical use.

Β

β€œOur aim was always centred on medical cannabis use, and I see no issue with this new move,” Anutin affirmed.

Β

Now sitting in opposition, Anutin is poised to ensure Bhumjaithai plays a vital role in scrutinising government policies. He confirmed the party's full engagement in reviewing the 2026 national budget bill, which remains under committee consideration.

Β

Addressing the contentious draft legislation for legalised casinos and entertainment complexes, Anutin clarified Bhumjaithai’s consistent opposition. He remarked, β€œWe have always been against casinos. When we were in government, we had to compromise. But now, as the opposition, we are free to make our own decisions.”

Β

As Bhumjaithai transitions from government partner to opposition, Anutin stated that the party would take definitive stances on contentious issues, free from coalition constraints.

Β

With the freedom to act independently, Bhumjaithai is set to play a more assertive role in shaping Thailand’s policy landscape, focusing on clarity and conviction in its positions.

It is the case. It was always about medical marijuana and 0.2% THC. The free market had other ideas and produced a multi billion baht industry. Now they want to shut this down.

Cannabis was decriminalized without any new legislation or regulations being put in place first. The result was a free-for-all.

Β

I can't see how they are going to put that genii back in the bottle.

Well, when you pulled the trigger you hit the bullseye for general cannabis use. Maybe in the future, before aiming at something, a bit of Lao Khao might help to steady your shot.
