In Sriracha, schoolchildren have traded textbooks for fire extinguishers in an innovative course designed to teach them how to combat fires effectively. This training follows a series of high-rise fires that recently alarmed the nearby city of Pattaya.

Yesterday, disaster officials from Sriracha teamed up with fire safety personnel from Phyathai Sriracha Hospital to conduct a fire safety workshop at Wat Ratsadaniyomtham Municipal School. The event, led by Seree Kerdthong, focused on pupils in years 10 to 12 and their teachers, providing both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in fire response.

The primary goal is to ensure that students remain calm during emergencies and understand the necessary steps to take, along with whom to contact when a fire erupts. An official noted, “It’s about equipping them with the knowledge and composure to handle fire emergencies, safeguarding lives, and averting damage.”

Participants engaged in hands-on activities, tackling simulated fires using extinguishers, and grasped critical fire prevention techniques that could prove life-saving in real situations. This initiative is part of a larger effort to enhance safety awareness among the younger generation, positioning schools as key players in community disaster readiness.

This training comes at a crucial time. Only weeks ago, a scare affected tourists in Pattaya when two separate fires broke out in high-rise buildings in Jomtien. The first incident occurred on the 27th floor of a condo on Soi Chaiyaphruek 1 in the early hours of May 28. The sight of smoke spewing from a kitchen forced panicked residents to evacuate down stairwells.

Firefighters from the Pattaya City Disaster Relief Centre, assisted by volunteers from the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Rescue Foundation, promptly put out the fire. By preparing students now, officials hope to build a safer, more aware community, ready to face and manage such incidents.
