Politics PM's Conversation with Cambodian Leader Sparks Corruption Probe

The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) is probing an audio recording involving Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen. The clip has sparked significant interest due to its sensitive nature.

 

NACC's secretary-general, Saroj Phuengrampan, confirmed that the complaint regarding the recording has been officially lodged, prompting preliminary investigations. He assured that such actions are typical in high-profile cases, with findings to be presented to the NACC board.

 

Public concern arose from reports suggesting a 10-day investigation timeline. Mr Saroj clarified that this timeframe only applies to initial fact-gathering and transcript verification, not the entire investigation. "There is no rush to expedite this process beyond our standard procedure," he stated.

 

Currently, the case is in its early stages, where officials are assessing whether it falls within the NACC's remit, particularly given the conversation's potential ethical breaches. Key to this phase is analysing the content, which includes discussions in multiple languages. "Accurate translation is crucial," noted Mr Saroj, indicating that language experts might be involved.

 

The conversation contained derogatory remarks about the commander of the 2nd Army Region and appeared to show a compliant stance towards Hun Sen, with Ms Paetongtarn allegedly expressing readiness to meet his demands.

 

Asked about the possibility of summoning Ms Paetongtarn for questioning, Mr Saroj indicated that if current evidence suffices, her direct involvement may not be necessary at this stage. He stressed that the investigation is free from political interference, dismissing speculations of political motivations behind the probe.

 

The involvement of national security or diplomatic agencies will be contingent upon the outcomes of the investigation, Mr Saroj added. The NACC remains committed to proceeding with transparency and diligence, ensuring that the high-profile nature of the case does not affect the integrity of the investigation.

That may reflect poor or incompetent leadership, but I'm not seeing how it qualifies as "corruption".

I don’t see what the fuss is about- “kowtowing “ is a normal practice in Thai culture. It’s also a negotiation tactic . If the General is out of line- move him. If the commander refuses to move him. Replace him. If this causes a coup then you never really had control of the military anyway. Who’s interests does the military serve?

Do everybody, from affected persons to the tax payer who finances such silliness the huge  favour and just shut down this commission, will you please?

 

What has this conversation to do with corruption? The novice PM walked straight into an open knife of her father’s “close” friend she trusted. No Thai entity can touch Hun Sen apart from lodging a diplomatic note via the Cambodian Embassy to Thailand and the Thai Embassy to Cambodia …… where it will sink into eternity.

 

She goofed up, no argument about that, reprimand her, run a non-confidence vote, but get on with real issues this country is facing and it is a HUGE mountain of unfinished problems. But no, it is being grossly misused by Tom, Dick and Harry for personal gain, political tug-of-war, slandering and insults all add to the tremendous loss of face. Carrying on through an NACC makes not only the prima-inter-pares having lost face already but turns entire Thailand into a ridiculous joke which is, again, run by a bunch of greedy, self-centered clowns.

 

How sad; Thailand and its people would deserve so much better 😞

Not really. She tried on behalf of the Shinawatra family not the country, hence calling Hun Sen  uncle while throwing a Thai general under the bus. Lots have done more than her, her aunt, or her dad. All they have done is pilfer what they can from the country. Even you must see she is not the sharpest tool in the shed.

What she did in a private phone call to Hun Sen was to belittle the Thai military Commander, saying they/he were/was the opposition and that she was ready to do anything to talk it over.

After all, anybody can write anything on the social media, but proof of the allegations is a lot harder to get.

It was a phone call not a meeting. I have heard the original telephone conversations and read the translated transcripts. Seems pretty verifiable to me. But of course it will not to you.

I have heard is not proof of anything. I have heard many things in my life but that certainly does not mean that they were all true.
