Thailand Plans to Turn Monitor Lizards into Economic Opportunity

I wonder how they taste?  Because, why waste the meat?

Contrary to crocodile, which indeed is delicious and tastes not all that different from chicken indeed, the meat of monitor lizards does not taste good, it has a very nasty aftertaste.

I am talking from a personal sample of one, so others might have different experiences.

Thailand the hub of lizard pants

It worked for Jim Morrisson. They should put on a concert in Lumpini Park...

Thailand is transforming its perspective on monitor lizards, moving from viewing them as pests to potential income sources.

Please can you do the same with soi dogs.

Really stupid and poorly thought out. It might cater to the Chinese and other Asians who are into such skins, but wait until an American or European gets nailed  going home with a monitor skin  product. It will be a hassle to explain to authorities. Special import permits will be needed. No one is going to trust documentation from Thailand which already has a negative image on  endangered species trafficking.

Interesting as all of snake, goana and iguana are (or were) eaten in their home countries. Could be their diet which makes the meat taste off

This actually happened for many years: a pickup truck from Laos would scoop up street dogs in Isaan, or get them from their owner (because they might have bitten someone or killed a chicken) in exchange for simple kitchen items.

This whole trade has largely stopped -- due to Western pressure by animal protection NGOs. It still is not difficult to get dog meat in Isaan, but the trade mainly has gone underground.

Unfortunately.

The government should be ashamed. Selling lizards for 500 baht? What's next? Flea markets to gin up revenue.

They should just copy/troll Trump's corrupt schemes.

Last year I was in Koh Rong and there were lizards the size of Komodo Dragons. They were just walking about.

What happens when they start eating expensive small dogs and other pets?
