A road crash claimed the lives of a couple in the early hours of the morning of 4 July, after their motorcycle, travelling against traffic, was struck by an 18-wheeler truck in Samut Prakan province.

The crash occurred at around 00:30 on Theparak Road inbound at kilometre marker 9, just before the Kanchanaphisek Expressway entrance in Bang Kaew subdistrict, Bang Phli district.

Upon arriving at the scene, Pol. Lt. Nares Leechareon from Bang Kaew Police Station found two victims lying in the road amidst a pool of blood. Emergency personnel from Chularat Suvarnabhumi Hospital and forensic doctors from Ramathibodi Chakri Naruebodindra Hospital attempted CPR but were unable to revive them. The victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

The deceased were identified as Mr Sunan Suanmak 33, and Ms Malaporn Khanasa 45. Nearby, authorities discovered pieces of their helmets, scattered footwear and motorcycle parts strewn across the road. Their black Honda motorcycle was found wedged underneath the truck.

The truck involved was an 18-wheeled Hino hauling a shipping container, registered in Bangkok. The 52-year-old driver, Mr Panchai, remained at the scene and cooperated fully with police.

Mr Panchai told officers he was on his way to deliver goods in the Bang Kradi area. As he approached the expressway on-ramp, he noticed a motorcycle heading in the wrong direction in the parallel lane. Moments later, the motorcycle suddenly veered across the lane directly in front of his truck. Despite his efforts to brake, the heavy vehicle could not stop in time and struck the couple at full speed.

Initial investigations suggest the couple had been riding against the flow of traffic and were attempting to cut across Theparak Road when they were fatally hit. Police suspect they may have been trying to reach a slip road on the opposite side.

Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby locations to confirm the exact details of the crash. The bodies have been sent to Ramathibodi Chakri Naruebodindra Hospital’s forensic institute.

The truck driver was taken to Bang Kaew Police Station for further questioning as part of the legal process.

Just yesterday, I was entering Jomtien Beach Rd from Soi-5.  Jomtien Beach Rd is supposedly one way, North to South.  I know to carefully check both directions as there is a constant stream of motorbikes and occasionally cars going against traffic.  It looked clear so I started pulling out. A loud "screech" and a motorbike coming from the left. tightly alongside parked cars so he was invisible, came with-in an inch off colliding with my car.

Naturally, he then gave me the stink-eye and shouted something at me.

I'd say, "Amazing" but actually just an everyday thing, every

time one ventures out on a Thai roadway.

This will never end as there is little to none  driver education here. A non caring attitude and lack of concern for life itself has many taking really stupid chances driving, especially on unprotected scooters and a majority not wearing head protection. Parents driving scooters haphazardly with no helmets is passed down to children doing the same.

Risk of death on a motorbike is like 29 times higher. That means you have to ride in a manner than is 29x more safe. Most don't.

I don't hear of many deaths caused by motorcycles hitting each other. They concentrate when riding. It is cage drivers that are the most dangerous.

The only safe method of driving here is staying completely away from everyone, as no one can be trusted. That's impossible so all you have left is defensive driving and trying to stay as far away from everyone as possible, don't trust anyone sitting on the sides of roads or near turnarounds, use your mirrors constantly, stay at or under the speed limit on rural roads and in cities, know there will be dogs and people running into the streets without looking, that a large majority either don't care or are incompetent, and drive only when you need to.

They driver 29x less safe, thus higher numbers of dead.

Lots of stupid foreigners riding wrong way on Jomtien Beach road.

And hundreds of thousands of locals who shouldn't be driving in the first place, let alone on fast moving scooters with children aboard. I've never seen a foreigner riding in the opposite direction but I see locals doing it daily.

No, they do it all the time, and concentration is very far from what they're doing, as the accidents attest. Driving into the back of parked vehicles happens daily here, a lot more than we'll ever hear about. I see drivers on phones every day, on scooters, let alone in vehicles. This does happen everywhere yes, but seeing there are more motorbikes here than most other countries, the deaths will continue.

F= ma

A car or truck has more force.

100km vs 100km equals 200km impact head on times mass

The complete disregard for road rules in Thailand is what keeps it in 3rd world status despite many other advances.

Makes it fun too. Driving in Thailand is easy and 29x more safe than motorbikes. Riding bikes is high risk. Common sense really.

Ha ha Freddy, even with your bionic vision you would not see the many foreigners riding the wrong direction on Jomtien Beach road from your home in Isaan

I don't see foreigners doing it here in Bangkok, but the locals do it consistently, that and motorcycles using Zebra crossings as U-Turns, pedestrians or no pedestrians in the crossing.

No, but I've been driving almost daily in a lot of places, all having foreigners, and I've never seen them doing anything besides speeding, just like they do back home. You'll rarely see any foreigners going the wrong way besides tourists that haven't adjusted to the other side driving. I do see locals doing it daily, and they should know better, and some do but ignore the possible consequences. There are more near misses here than anywhere I've ever driven, and I've put in more than twice the number of miles than the average drivers.

Low IQs and lack of education. 4th grade intelligence. Riding a motorbike without a helmet is just stupid.

I will shortly be going for a hair cut on my shopping scooter.

Do I ride 150m against no traffic or do I do the 1.5km U-turn round trip again with no traffic.

And no I won't be wearing a helmet. But I will wear one later to ride the 8kms to the pub for lunch.

There is actually.

Most cops don't go near the open roads unless near borders. You can drive from CM to Khon Kaen and not see one. I did it. Not one cop. The cops set up check points near borders for the Burmese or others. They don't care about farangs. They set up check points in Phuket to catch dumb tourists without helmets. They don't care about cars.
