To me, Thailand is a trap of convenience. There’s nothing particularly bad about it to get you to leave, but nothing truly lovable either. What keeps me here is how easy everything is and how no one really bothers me. The people are pretty easy to be around too. Getting things done is simple most of the time, I don’t have to do much for myself, and there’s plenty of food with lots of choices and just about everything I need can be delivered right to my door from a few clicks of an app. I can walk almost anywhere I need to go. So I’d say I stay because life here is effortless, not because it’s amazing. It’s fine overall, nothing major to complain about, but it doesn’t check all the boxes either.

To sum up part one of your comment:  life IN THAILAND , if one is not a total jerk,  is a very comfortable and affordable place to pass the days , and years.

The part about amazing and "checking all the boxes"  is such an individual and subjective matter that can only be determined by each person.  And, the portion of their life (under 30 .... under 50 .... 60..... or on the waiting list for heaven.   I very rarely spent much time on TV  when I was busy working or playing . Living here from the time when dirt roads and no internet nor GPS nor dating sites was the norm ...was Amazing !

The world is different now.  Thailand is different now.  Everyone is different now ( then 10 or 20 or 40 years ago )

If i compare my life to most my age ,  or even at different periods of my life , I am very satisfied that my choices were good .   for me.    Maybe many in life or on forums feel the same , or maybe many would do things differently.

The "older guys"  which the OP is thinking about ( who i believe take up most of the time and posts here) .... IMO  are a combination of bored, lonely, angry,  not very healthy, no longer feel vital nor important , disappointed in their now lack of choices ... in other words, just like a great majority of adults reaching that point in life when energy and relationships are fading fast.

So..... they come here and get into fights , tell anonymous others how stupid they are, show photos of their house or hotel rooms ,  copy and paste arguments ad nauseum,

etc etc .   And add emojis like seventh graders do .    🥸🤣😃

Why not ?    Even the OP is just killing some time .....

I will add that when I have stayed for two month periods I have gotten bored and did return to the USA to work or do other things. As an engineer I still like to keep my brain busy doing technical things.  But it is hard to beat Thailand for monthly relaxation and a break

When you have something that ties you here for good reasons, the only things that becomes annoying, is the heat and pollution. And I would say without the heavy pollution It could had been a paradise all year around. But again, we are creator of our well being, and we can move around when it is peak season. The heat prevents most of us for doing any outdoor activity, and I feel it gets worse with the age, especially if you have some body mass carrying. Be it fat or muscles.

This, but only seen her 19 times, crowds are getting a bit much at my age. Includes famous song about an old bar girl looking back on her life in Pattaya and Patpong!

It’s ok, I think they’re already upset anyway, waking up yet again to another boring day they’re forced to live out in Thailand, with only their online moaning to help them cope.

haven't you built an airconditioned gym yet?    and a swimming pool ?

one thing about N thailand is that generally it is cooler .   with the intermittent rains this year , lots of nice days .  Very low aqi every day .   not as humid as the South. (where i usually go if pollution hits CM  hard around Feb or March .)

I do have a gym, but not there all the day, and never going to build an indoor 20m swimming pool if Im not there at least 250 days a year. So my next projects if I return, is a new gym and a indoor 20m swimming pool I will use every day. Most I see who built a swimming pool, built to small to actually swim in it, and most likely would had been better off with a larger cheaper bath tub. Many hardly use their pool or maintains it if not having kids or are the type who are diciplined enough to have daily routines.

Yeah, when you live in the middle of nowhere you need to build your own gym.

I prefer living in a smaller place in a densely populated area.

And working out with other people is more fun than isolating yourself at home in your home gym in the middle of nowhere.

Why do you make it sound so negative?

There is pros and cons with everything, and I'm not living a stationary life. And I do not mind being at the farm 2-3 weeks and never leave except for a motorbike ride or a larger shopping trip.

We all have choices, and I made my choice based on my needs 🤗

Do you hear me complain ?

I dont want to go wildly off topic into conspiracies, but admit it

you came to Thailand to get away from the jab, Fauci, masking ...

And little did you know Fauci's tentacles would reach Thailand, right?

ahhh,  obviously you do not know rumak .   top of this page 4 will give a bit of history ...

"Living here from the time when dirt roads and no internet nor GPS nor dating sites was the norm ...was Amazing ! "

but in a sense you're right;   I came here  partly to get away from the "tentacles" of Western society ..... land of the "free" and home of the nine to five .

That was close to 40 years ago !   So indeed,  I am proud to have escaped to enjoy the adventures in the Thailand of old ...before Fauci and company took over. .

i can only imagine if the Pattaya beach water was clean and really swimmable.  If that were the case it would be something to behold.  Tourism would increase, long stays would increase, but that might be countered by greatly increased prices.

Pattaya for tourists is a dump. Smelly streets, Traffic, bad water quality, but there is some good restaurants, good live bars, nightclubs, and Pattaya is cheap. Even the decent hotels is relative cheap. But Pattaya and Jomtien became the Benidorm, flooded by tourists in high season.

i know.  I been going since 2004.   Interestingly some of the real old timers tell me those little hollow gullys on the side of the streets such as Soi 7 and Soi 8 used to be for raw sewage and grey water.  Now, the growth of hotels has far outpaced the water and sewage treatment facilities

It used to be much better up into the early 200s.  In low season really no traffic and one could easily cross second road.  It had all I wanted or needed.  Still has attraction to me and I have not given up on it yet.  But the latest thing with those potential taxation, foreign income, global income, etc.. Well depending how that shakes out would be the straw that breaks the camel's back.  I would simply not risk staying over 180 days in country in a given year and would plan my full retirement years around that.

You need to stop looking at Pattaya from your Western prospective.
