Residents of a village in Ban Bueng district are living in fear after a long-troubled man, reportedly under the influence of drugs, violently assaulted his own father with an iron rod. The 67-year-old victim was left with serious injuries and remains hospitalised, while the suspect was eventually subdued by police using non-lethal force.

The incident occurred in Khlong Kiew subdistrict, where 38-year-old Mr. Suwat Boonmun, reportedly in a drug-fuelled frenzy, struck his father, Mr. Prasop Boonmun, multiple times with a metal bar. The assault left the elderly man in critical condition, suffering from internal bleeding and potentially requiring brain surgery, according to initial medical assessments from Ban Bueng Hospital.

Local residents, familiar with the suspect’s violent history, reported that Suwat had been attacking his father and destroying property in the household for over 17 years, dating back to 2008. Frustration had grown within the community over the lack of lasting solutions.

Mr. Chaiyot Narongrit, the village headman’s deputy in Khlong Kiew, confirmed that Suwat had previously undergone a four-month drug rehabilitation programme at a military camp. While his behaviour had temporarily improved, he soon relapsed upon returning home, resuming his use of narcotics and violent outbursts.

A 26-year-old eyewitness to the attack, reported that neighbours immediately alerted police, who responded swiftly and employed riot shields, restraint tools and a stun device to subdue the suspect. The operation took approximately 15 minutes to bring Suwat under control.

Police documented the scene and confiscated the iron rod used in the attack. While officers initially filed charges for drug use, they advised the victim’s family to submit medical records to support further legal action once the father’s condition stabilises.

Authorities have labelled Suwat a dangerous individual and further charges are expected pending a complete investigation.
