  • sweet dream until he realises thailand is not as cheap as it once was. the golden years are over and unless he finds a way to get income he will likely be going back to th uk quicker than he thinks. w

  • Don't knock him, if you lived in Mansfield you would have taken Beirut or Dhaka as better options too.

  • i'm not up to date with the visa rules and regulations. how is it legally possible to simply move to thailand with a young family and decide to live here ?

Riots in Spain.............soon in the UK.......... this guy is heading for greener pastures.

After a few months cooped up with his family in one room, he will start to explore the dark side of Bangkok.  Then Pattaya.   Then money problems.  Kids won't be happy.  Wife will be miserable.    They will tell Thais how to do things.  This is fail.  Kids will want to go back home.  Dad falls in love with a bar girl.    Scammed.  More money gone.  Oh, it's only $300.   Except it's every day......soon it's "only" $3000.  Then $30000.  Then the house money is gone.  lol

Ah, good times.

 What Tax returns?

If he claims welfare he will not need to do one!

He will have to do at least one or two so that HMRC can determine his change in status then he might be informed that tax returns are no longer required unless or until his tax situation changes and he becomes tax liable again - he should also declare himself and his wife ‘non resident for tax purposes’.

I wish them well, but it seems like they’re very naive.

Wait till he learns rental is not that cheap.

Thailand is not as cheap as he thinks it is.

Rentals are not cheap in Thailand ?

Thailand is very cheap, overall, compared with the UK

No idea, why some have difficulty in understanding this.

Having said that. I doubt that he has thought it through, and unless he has a passive source of income, it will not end well for them

If he had half a brain he would extend the flight and get off in Oz. Where the locals speak English and he can earn at least twice what he's earning in Britain as a truck driver, probably 5 times as much if he heads to the minefields in Western Oz.

Heard it’s a mine field out there😃

Whilst I dont disagree with getting out of UK I wouldn't recommend relocating to Thailand!

I dont think he has looked at what's on offer regarding his children's education?

As a family unit what is on offer, go visit some temples, the water park, pop into Market village for a European breakfast at a few 100 per person or find an ex pat restaurant or some Thai street food.

Perhaps at night you could go see a film? You and the misses pop into local bar for a drink? Maybe you could all take up golf?

Seriously have a rethink perhaps go for a months holiday then make a decision.

Good luck.

There are a few challenges, and from reading everything here, it seems there is a lot more to the story.  I am sure @CharlieH can expoubnd on the visa situation BUT

a. If he is going to use Thai schools, then he will have to use the high-class ones because his kids will not be able to handle Thai schools.

b. Visas are going to be a headache

c. Teaching is only a financial stopgap and causes issues because he does not have the qualifications to get a work permit. Thus limiting where he is going to get work

When he gets older, he will face significant financial challenges because leaving early means receiving a smaller Old Age Pension.

As for his house in the UK, it's a coin flip because you're not guaranteed to get good rental tenants. Personally, if he has family in the town, then I would have them look after the house and rent it out on a one-year rental agreement.  That way if it all goes to hell here he can go back and have at least a place to stay.

Question for my smarter members who teach in international schools

What are the requirements for admission for an international  student besides being reasonably well off

Go for thai schools that have international programmes & use recognised decent exam boards: AQA/Oxford-AQA, Cambridge, Edexcel, IB; then get the kids to go solely for passing these exams even if using integrated curricula - they are bound to pass everything else.   This is so the kids can go to universities of their choice, if they do well.

At least they won't be lectured in school about Allah, LBGT etc, and less dangerous on the street for his children.

 Yes very true,

But it's the only positive about this couples dreaming.

Maybe they are just waiting for family members to die,  so they get the big pay out.

But I expect to see them on a go fund me,  in about 6 years time.

I'm sure in 10 years time, he will be a millionaire.

maybe he will be like, My Mate Nate. :giggle:

Im wondering, if he is homeschooling them, how he is going to do with visa for the family?

We dont know, he might be, but the obstacles getting there, and dragging his kids with him,

We’ll, I wouldn’t done it, because I would worked my ass off while I could, and made sure my kids went through the schools they wanted, and then take my hike for something else. But that’s me, and I dont even have kids myself, or my wife. Even then, I would put my kids first, not myself

I would take him more serious,  if he had done this in a different country

His hands are tied here.

His a dreamer.

Selling their home is a very bad move (IMO). But, maybe they are relying on inheriting property from their parents.

When I moved to Thailand, I did not sell my appartment here, and now when we are going back, It is good to have an appartment I can use as financial security dept free.

He has researched ALL those issues you refer to. Both him and his wife can get jobs as TEFL teachers. Starting of with a certificate then working up to a PhD and working at the same time.

You are very negative; have you been in Thailand too long?

I came here in 1990 with a one way ticket and £200 in my pocket and no work. Things worked out fine!

With two kids come along and intend to home school them? That’s where he put me off. Nothing wrong with being a dreamer and actuallly go out and fulfill your dreams, but the guy got responsibilities.

Lol, I was thinking I’d rather move to Mogadishu than live in Mansfield.

And I’m from Warrington 😳

What a tiny small minded outlook you have.  My folks moved from the UK in 1975 with us three boys under 10, to the other side of the world and it was the best thing they ever did.

Kids in thailand (well, where I live) still play in the streets, run around smiling and living a super stimulating, interesting life.  Compared to kids in the west that spend all day inside on their phones.  The opportunities in Tahiland are vast for people with a little drive and get up and go.

Glad the world is full of people like my parents and the guy in this article and not Debbie Downers like you.

It ain’t 1975 anymore! Back then you could do almost anything without papers, and get visa and work.

Kids love it wherever they have other kids to play with, and eventually will live on their phones, just like all other countries. What they'll do when they get to be teenagers is what matters, and then into adulthood. People here are in debt just as much, and have very little also. In the west you can have much more if you work for it. Here most stay poor all their lives

Do you see thai kids out playing much without supervision?

If he get  50k subscribers on youtube that would be a tidy income and use savings frugally over 10 to 15 years then would work.  Health insureance and "potentially" international schools could make him a pauper soon enough .........tik tok ?

I think people do not know what it takes to make money online as an influencer, and from what I can understand, most of his viewers comes because of his former work as an truck driver?

This gives you a rough estimate of potential income from YouTube with 50k followers.

With 50,000 subscribers and 150,000 views, a YouTube channel could potentially earn anywhere from $37.50 to $600 from ad revenue alone, depending on the CPM (cost per 1000 views). Earnings can be significantly higher with other revenue streams like sponsorships, merchandise, and affiliate marketing. The exact amount will vary based on factors like viewer demographics, content type, and watch time

For those of you slagging off the UK for whatever personal reasons you have,I moved back from Thailand 4 years ago, having lived in Thailand for 4 years,& life is good.

I'm not rich, but I think the big determining factor is I am mortgage & rent free.I brought my Thai wife & daughter here 2 1/2 years ago & they have been amazing.Daughter has thrived at school, wife has established a Thai Massage Therapy business paying her £3,500 a month.

I have woken up to blue skies,25 degrees, fresh air.Luckily I live in the chilled city of Norwich.30 coffee shops, huge selection of different foods. We have visited all the areas to show how beautiful the UK is eg Lake District,Dales,Peak District,Cotwolds,Cornwall etc.

At the present time I don't miss Thailand 1%.No mosquitoes,no armies of full-stop ants in the kitchen,no air pollution,no visas,no need to stay inside because too hot etc.

My point being:slag off the UK if you want,I'm sure you have your reasons. You won't find me slagging off Thailand despite its drawbacks as each to their own.But the reality check is anywhere can be the place to be,but it depends on personal circumstances & perspective.

No experience and seems no uni degree.... lucky if he gets 30k starting off. No mention in the op of the guys education. As for a phd... pipe dream. ABAC uni international program aint cheap, master more expensive phd very expensive.... foolish move with little to no real research. Youtube and tik tok dont count
