In a landmark decision, Thailand’s National Health Security Office (NHSO) has announced that hormone therapy for gender affirmation will now be covered under the country's Universal Health Coverage, commonly known as the Gold Card system. This progressive move, set to begin in the fiscal year 2025, comes with a substantial budget of over 145 million baht (approximately 3.9 million USD) aimed at enhancing equality and support for the transgender and gender-diverse communities.

The decision was made official on 7th July, with Somsak Thepsutin, Thailand’s Minister of Public Health, at the helm of the National Health Insurance Policy Committee meeting. The committee concluded that hormone services should be considered a health-promoting measure, vital for both physical and mental well-being.

Somsak highlighted the alignment of this policy with the government’s broader commitment to gender equality. “The approval of this benefit follows the government’s policy,” he stated. “The administration is dedicated to promoting gender equality and providing all Thais with dignified access to essential health services.”

Under the new scheme, six vital medicines used in hormone therapy will be subsidised, and special service units will be established to administer treatment. These will work alongside community organisations that currently support transgender individuals.

Somkap made it clear that this initiative is a proactive step towards reducing self-administered hormone use, which often leads to severe health issues. The programme ensures that hormone therapy will be delivered by licensed medical professionals, adhering to the standards set by the Medical Council of Thailand.

“This resolution is the fruition of relentless efforts by various sectors to create a society where everyone can live with equality and dignity,” Somsak declared.

By making hormone therapy an official benefit under the Gold Card system, Thailand is taking a significant step towards providing comprehensive healthcare for all its citizens. This policy not only addresses immediate health needs but also paves the way for a more inclusive and equitable future for everyone in Thai society.
