Marriage is a custom. Women love marriage cause they like dressing up and they get a piece of paper so they can get money later if it breaks down. Not much in a marriage for a man.

Yes 1 farang and 1 Thai means a couple should consider both parties ideas of fairness. Some farangs don't seem to be able to negotiate terms of a relationship. If a guy is paying a women 20,000 or 30,000 a month plus paying sinsod it does not look like love to me. Looks like an employment contract. I don't pay either. Never would.

Amazingly this came up to pretty much within a few thousand of ours. However we were told if we ever returned to live in Thailand it would be returned and it was. So technically I paid nothing.

Why are dowries opposite here? Usually dowries were given to men to take the unproductive woman off the families hands.

I used £20 notes, looked good and got them back as soon as it was over.

Not quite the same. The daughter would be expected to look after the parents in their old age and taking the carer away came at a cost. These days the situation is more variable across the country.

Not the same for the son, he is expected to take care of his own family.

My future wife when I asked when she plan for me to meet her family? She told me the truth that certain members of her family kind of outcasted her because they heard she was with a farang first thought she was in the business.

One day on my visit to her village in a local mall eating we ran into her mother and sister while they were shopping. They ask who I was she reply my farang boyfriend they laugh told her he looks like us!

All she ask of me was to take care of her and her 1 year old grand child that she was the youngest of all her kids because of that there was never much left for her that she hasn't been very lucky.

Met my Thai wife in 1988 during my first trip back to Thailand after leaving it in 1973. 

 

Proposed to her in 1990 while she was in the U.S. of A. and married her in Thailand in 1990 ... after the bad, wrong, dumb, advice I got from U.S. of A. immigration employees in San Francisco, CA.   An embassy employee in Bangkok gave me the correct advice I needed to get my wife into the U.S. of A.  

 

I gave my wife's Mom $400.00 worth of baht in 1990 before the marriage, which my wife later told me paid for all the food at the wedding, and there was a lot of that!

 

Wife got her green card 8 months later.   She has a Thai college degree in business from a university in Bangkok.   She is damned good with numbers, especially if those numbers have a $ sign in front of them.   

 

After our marriage I found out that she intended to leave me when her 2 year conditional green card became permanent.   It's been 30 years since the green card became permanent.   I don't know why she hasn't left me yet!

 

I have been retired from my Federal Agent job for over 14 years now with a very good income.   My wife owns a business in the U.S. of A. and had an income about 2-3  times more than mine.   Did I say she is good with numbers that have a $ sign in front of them?

 

We own 2 homes in the U.S. of A., she owns a condo and a house here in Bangkok.   She paid cash for both.   I think the  $400.00 I gave her Mom was a damned good investment!

I did not pay a Sinsod by definition but reality there are more way to pay! Don't think for a minute that hasn't crossed my mind.

A year later I returned and kneaded before her mother prior early that year her father passed. Never asked but I offered she declined.  At their family farm with a few family members her mother said a few words, blessed and tied a string around my wrist. When we returned to Pattaya Amphur we made it official. 

My brother prior to me locating him Golden Triangle Mae Sa, was already married noted he also paid none.

 

That being said I'm not criticizing those who do my comment was towards the list coming from Thai although I know it is a joke.

 

Fast forward 7 years ago my son now wife came before me after telling me she was pregnant I was expecting because I had a dislike for her freeloading family. The conversation " Tradition "  I told her the problem I'm not Thai but Chinese and my tradition you pay me because of my son. But to get off on right foot give me a number that I can live with. I nearly choked! I spend more than than on a given night buying ladies drink but I can see why her parents couldn't get rid of her sooner! 🤣 attitude! 

 

I've seen Thai give have a big event for a show then zero thereafter.
