Thailand to file protest after border landmine blast injures three soldiers

Featured Replies

Thailand is set to file a formal protest against Cambodia after three Thai soldiers were seriously injured by newly planted landmines near the border. Thai officials claim the Russian-made PMN-2 mines were freshly laid following a May 28 clash, violating both Thai sovereignty and the Ottawa Treaty, which bans anti-personnel mines. Cambodia denies the allegation, but Thailand says it has evidence. The Thai government is escalating the matter diplomatically and militarily, including notifying ASEAN, briefing allies, and increasing border security to prevent further incidents.

It's now 0914 and for the last 30 minutes here in Prasat Surin (some 30kms from the border in a straight line) we can hear 'bombs' blasting/exploding. And for a few minutes the sounds were getting louder and the windows of our house were shaking very slightly.

My b/f is talking to his home village - Khok Salaeng, some 3 or 4 kms from the border. Everyone has been ordered to the bunkers (left over from 40 or more years ago). School children - right next to my family farm - fleeing in all directions. Local roads chokker with motorbikes ...

So it seems we're talking shells coming in (just like old times for the elderly) not mines detonating ...

My b/f now heading off to the village to collect family (a dozen or more) and bring them here for safety.

Booms getting very loud now. Shells landing (I'm guessing) only 3 or 4 kms away. Windows shaking.

Not sure what to do. Hide under the bed, I guess.

There is always a closet...... 😙

Stay safe, and keep away from the windows. Don't use bright lights that offer your profile.  You should  collect some water, just in case. That's my experience from Indonesia.

Thanks. Windows noted (I'm typing right next to one now). Lights not an issue - they're firing blind from 30kms away, though it's interesting that they're wandering all over the landscape. Water is in tall tank a few metres from the house ...

Latest 1005: B/f just returned from the village in Phanom Dong Rak. Family following crammed in to SUV. He says Cambodians using drones to look for targets.

Some family arrived - MIL & 2 adults & 2 kids. Many more trapped in the village - can't get out because of traffic everywhere.

B/f says Thai Air Force in action.

Sound (and FEEL) of shells now rare, and - mostly - further away. But - apart from the family village - Prasat is the only real built-up area within easy reach from across the border, so an obvious target (I'm guessing) for the Cambodians if they want to get nasty.
