The Thai army has strongly refuted claims from Cambodian authorities accusing them of using chemical weapons in cross-border operations. The allegations, described as unfounded and misleading, emerged from a Facebook post by Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata of the Cambodian Ministry of Defence.

According to Lt. Gen. Socheata, Thai forces allegedly invaded Cambodian territory, deploying chemical weapons in their operations. However, the Thai army swiftly dismissed these accusations as "fake news" devoid of any factual basis.

Thailand reaffirmed its commitment to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), underlining that it has neither the policy nor practice of developing or using such weapons. Highlighting their focus on international humanitarian principles, the Thai military emphasised the protection of civilian safety at all times.

The Thai army countered by accusing the Cambodian Defence Ministry of using "disinformation" to gain international sympathy and legitimacy. This tactic, they argue, jeopardises regional peace and stability.

In related developments, Lt. Gen. Boonsin Phadklang, Commander of the Thai Second Army Region, addressed images circulating in Cambodia that depicted him with "RIP" across his photo. He unequivocally dismissed these as false, asserting, "I am still here."

Lt. Gen. Boonsin insisted that he remains active on the Thai-Cambodian border, committed to safeguarding Thai sovereignty and ensuring public safety. He urged the Thai public to rely only on information from credible news sources, warning against the confusion caused by Cambodian "fake news" efforts.

These unfolding events underscore the complexities of Thai-Cambodian relations, which have historically oscillated between cooperation and conflict. The region's stability often hinges on effective communication and diplomatic negotiations between the two nations.

For now, the Thai army's position is clear: they maintain their innocence regarding the chemical weapon allegations and call for caution against misinformation disrupting regional peace.

As tensions simmer, the international community is likely to keep a watchful eye on developments, given the potential for broader implications across Southeast Asia. The need for dialogue and transparency remains paramount to de-escalating tensions and fostering mutual trust.

Relations between Thailand and Cambodia are complex and multifaceted, with historical disputes occasionally flaring up, necessitating diplomatic finesse and mutual respect. Continuous dialogue and adherence to international norms remain essential for maintaining harmony in the region.

By addressing the current allegations head-on, Thailand aims to reassure both its citizens and the international community of its commitment to peace and compliance with global standards. The situation remains fluid, and further diplomatic engagement will be essential in navigating these challenging waters.

In the meantime, the story serves as a reminder of the delicate balance of power and communication required to maintain stability in Southeast Asia, where historical grievances can easily resurface if not carefully managed.
