A 25-year-old man awaiting conscription into the Army narrowly escaped death after being ambushed and shot multiple times by a rival while on his way to work early morning on 31 July.

The victim, later identified as Phumin Thienyut, was riding his motorcycle along Thepharak Road outbound at kilometre 6 in Bang Kaeo subdistrict, Bang Phli district, Samut Prakan, when he was targeted. The attacker, reportedly known to the victim, had lain in wait near the victim’s workplace and opened fire as he passed. Despite sustaining serious injuries, Mr Thienyut managed to flee the scene and sought help from nearby street vendors at a bus stop.

Officers from Bang Kaeo Police Station, along with rescue workers from Ruamkatanyu Foundation and a medical team from Prince Suvarnabhumi Hospital, rushed to the scene at approximately 07:35. They found Mr Thienyut collapsed on the pavement, suffering from two gunshot wounds to his right shoulder and one to the abdomen. He was quickly transported to hospital for emergency surgery, where his condition remains critical.

Initial investigations revealed that Mr Thienyut had left his residence in Soi Bang Na-Trat 39 and was heading to a warehouse in Soi Chalerm Phrakiat 28, where he had been working while awaiting military service.

A local food vendor near the site of the attack told reporters that although she did not witness the shooting itself, she clearly heard multiple gunshots. “There weren’t many vehicles on the road at that time. After the shots, I saw the man ride up and collapse in front of my stall. I called the police immediately,” she said.

The victim’s father, Mr Samran, arrived at the scene after being informed of the incident. He told authorities that his son is currently enrolled at Uthenthawai University but had temporarily deferred his studies to prepare for military conscription with the Army’s second intake. He had taken a job at the warehouse while waiting to report for duty. Mr Samran added that he was unaware of any specific motive but suspected the assailant had been watching his son for several days.

Police investigators are now collecting forensic evidence from the scene, including bullet casings. CCTV footage from the area is also being reviewed in an attempt to identify the perpetrator, who remains at large. As yet, no eyewitnesses have come forward with a clear description of the suspect and the victim is not yet in a condition to give a statement.

Authorities say the investigation is ongoing.
