Krabi Man Arrested for Smuggling Gun into Phuket

In a tense operation, a 25-year-old named Natthaphong was arrested in Krabi after police discovered a loaded handgun in his vehicle, suspecting plans for gang violence in Phuket.

The arrest took place during a routine checkpoint on Phetkasem Road in Ao Luek district, a strategic move as part of increased security in southern tourist hotspots. Natthaphong, apprehended by the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), was driving a pickup truck and appeared anxious when stopped by Highway Police. Instead of cooperating, he attempted to flee, leading to a swift police pursuit that resulted in his vehicle being surrounded and searched.

Inside the truck, officers found a .40-calibre semi-automatic pistol, 25 rounds of ammunition, and a black leather holster. The weapon was cleverly hidden but discovered during the search.

Upon questioning, Natthaphong allegedly admitted his destination was Phuket and confessed to possessing the gun illegally. He stated he lacked a gun licence, carrying the weapon for self-defence against potential encounters with rival gangs. "He confessed to previous disputes with youth groups, which made him feel the need for protection," an officer revealed.

This arrest is a part of a broader initiative to curb the rising tensions among youth gangs in southern Thailand, especially in tourist-laden areas like Phuket. Recently, these areas have experienced an uptick in minor violent incidents, prompting authorities to bolster security along key transport routes.

All items, including the firearm, ammunition, and the vehicle, have been handed over to Ao Luek Police Station. Natthaphong now faces serious charges related to the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. His potential connections to organised crime in the region are under investigation.

Police continue to urge the public to report any suspicious activities, stressing their dedication to safeguarding tourist areas. "We assure the public that we are taking all necessary steps to prevent violence and secure our communities. Armed threats will not be tolerated, especially in places frequented by tourists and families."

In this climate of heightened vigilance, authorities remain committed to ensuring the safety of both residents and visitors, making the region a secure and welcoming destination.
